Looks like I'm the one to open the image thread.

In the end it came down to Hasse, Henry and I to do the walk, ostensibly to shoot the G20 light shows around the city. I think my favourite shot of the day was actually one I took a bit before we all met up. I thought the light from the stairwell in this covered walkway at the Art Gallery was wonderful:

So, on to the lights:

I wasn't happy with any of my shots of the City Hall and ultimately I think the best part of the night for me wasn't the lights but actually the people. Lots of photographers taking photos, and lots of people just looking at the lights. I think I ended up shooting people just as much, if not more, than I shot the lights.

First, in North Quay on our way to King George Square there were more than a few street performers working:

Then there were the people looking and shooting the lights, a bit of a crowd scene at times:

People just chatting and enjoying a meal or drink or strolling:

And kids playing around, or in, the sculptures in the street:

So, lots of scope for shooting different things and a great evening.

An a thanks should go to Hasse for bringing this up. I haven't been shooting much recently... the G20 lights have been a good excuse for me to take out my camera and go get some shots.

Henry,

I think I pressed the wrong button the other day because I thought I had added some comments. Great set. I love the one of the church and the SGIO building, and the City Hall works a lot better with longer exposures to capture more of the moving lights. That's where I really should have had a tripod that night.

I'm also glad you got a good one of one of the "carnival girls". I photographed the one in green but she was moving towards me when I pressed the shutter and I got a bit of subject blur. I think that particular shot may have been my "one that got away" for the night.

...bump for RnR. I'm looking forward to seeing your take on things as well... particularly those candid people shots (which wasn't something I focused on).

Heh - in the end I don't have many shots I'm happy with. New gear in an unknown light levels made for iffy takes.

This one came out well though.

Some bad stair-casing on the bridge with the railing 'frequency' getting into the Nyquist region after the resize I'm guessing. Should crop out the building at the far right...

Like David, I love watching people, unfortunately the gear that I used for people shooting were not gelling with me that night. But it wasn't a total loss. Besides having some nice folk to talk to, it got me to have a bit of a think on my gear selection and will head back to low light city conditions shortly for a second try. I'll post back here

Hasse,

Sorry you weren't happy with your results. We have days and we have days. I like that shot above, it really captures that "last light" feel before the light really starts to go.

Let us see your low light results when you are happy with them.

I think your probably too hard on yourself... I like some of the stuff I saw on the back of your camera LCD. Especially that glowy stuff from those manual lenses :) Maybe we'll try again next time?

Hi Brisbane people! I have been absent from the forum for a while, and have missed two photo walks: the first I arrived at too late (2013) and missed 2014 due to appendicitis.
I thought I should indicate my interest in any walks that might come up.

ozfoz,

You posted a reply in a thread so it's available to anyone looking at the site. If you just want to contact one member you have to personal message them.

I don't think we've done another photowalk here in Brisbane since the one in this thread almost a year ago. We should probably think about trying for another one some time soon. What happens is that someone will think of a date and/or a location and post a message to start a new thread with an invitation. Just keep your eyes open for anything with "Brisbane" and "photowalk" or "get together" in the subject and you'll find out about it. It's a fairly loose and casual approach.

It will be good to have a new face in the group.

A bit last minute, but anyone going to riverfire tomorrow night? I'm tossing up about whether to go. Any suggestions on good spot to photograph the fireworks, without too much crowd?
