The original OMD is such a beautiful camera in silver with the black grips. Liking this in silver so much made me wonder why I was disliking other silver cameras. It's not the VF hump... (answer below). The lens mounts flush with the body, so both color body looks good with either color lens:

    285557,xcitefun-olympus-om-d-e-m5-2.

I'd pick the silver for its retro look, but would be perfectly happy with black, even with all silver lenses:

    em5-1.

Next, I had a black & silver PM2. Lenses do NOT mount flush with the body like on the EM5, but the lens ring is colored black, so IMO it looks good with black or silver lenses. Actually, the ring is silver, then black, then silver, and if the lens is black, black again. But they're thin and compliment the body's silver highlights. Plus there was no other black color choice in the PM2 model to distract me from liking this one. I think it's a tolerable zebra with either color lens (minus the blue lens rings that is!):

You know the "silver-nose" lenses that are black with a silver ring? Not so cute:

    6238282678_d361a2ab46_z.

Even worse. Just one ring to interrupt the black:

    666-Panasonic-Lumix-GM1-with-Olympus-9-18mm-lens_1384187314.

With a silver GM1, you still get the black body but a silver ring. So every black lens looks like a silver nose.

    This is good...

...but this is not because the ring is an abrupt color change:

    Good:

    Odd:

Silver on silver looks the absolute best!:

But this is also pretty nice to my eyes:

    hi_PC030512.

But if you're stuck with a black lens and silver camera you get this:

    933853.

Silver PL7 suffers the same fate with black lenses:

Next up, my aesthetic review of the "Orange Ring":

    Kidding! :2thumbs:

    Conclusion

I just ordered a black GM1. It was between that and the PL7 (smallest cameras with electronic shutter or EFC) but I decided that the GM1 is the ultimate in small and inexpensive. PL7 I can get in a few months when I find one cheaper. Thanks for reading. Crown me the king of camera porn for a day!

Does the matte silver of the PL 15mm match the silver of the GX7 body? I haven't been able to tell from any photos or videos I've seen.

Not to be disagreeable, but I think this looks better than the silver lens on a black camera. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

    Fun post.

My mind has changed on this topic, and I'm having a tough time pinpointing exactly how it happened or why. When the E-M5 first came out I thought that the silver body was incredibly sexy, even though I wasn't in a position at the time to swing the upgrade. Very recently I finally made the E-M5 leap (I enjoy the economies of being 1½-2 generations behind the curve) and I found myself drawn more to the black model, which I eventually purchased.

I'm still trying to determine what made me switch in this latest purchase from "team silver" to "team black". I'm not in the "stealth" camp...my original M43 camera was a black E-PL1 upon which I installed a bright yellow Aki Asahi skin. My next camera was a silver E-P3, which I love the look of. Most (if not all) of my lenses are black, so maybe that plays into it.

When I get bored of the black-out E-M5, maybe I'll slap a skin on it. I'd love to see how this one looks on a black body:

I feel the same about being a year or so behind things. You get cheaper cameras. If you watch last year's movie previews instead of this year you can go rent it immediately :)

I used to have 100% silver point & shoot cameras but never had the retro silver & black which looks so cool. But if the ring is silver and the body black I dont like the black lenses on it. I like the "new-to-me" silver lenses on black bodies now too.

I agree. The "Silver" bodies have a lot of black, so a black lens still matches. The silver lens on an an all black body stands out a bit too much.

It it not like it doesn't match, though. It's just not the same bright silver like the kit zoom.

I don't know that I'd say the kit zoom matches exactly either though - it seems a little darker than the silver on the GX7. I just wondered since the matte silver is a new color for Panasonic and they seem to also be using it on the new 42.5mm and 30mm lenses

I can post a pic later. I have a Silver GX7 and a PL 15mm in silver (and a kit lens in silver)

I don't know if the Silver matte on the 15mm is just a Leica special or if it will be the same on the 42.5mm. Guess we will see whether the new lenses look more like the 15mm or the 12-32mm kit lens.

For me, OMD silver body + black lens = perfection.

If I had a black one, I'd be forced to trick it out with a fancy skin, but I'm content to leave the silver as it is. For now, anyway.

I personally don't care for the silver lens on black body. Mine are the opposite: black 17mm f2.8 and 25mm f1.8 on a silver EM10. Looks splendid in my opinion.

Definitely not a fan of the silver lens on a black body...for me...all black body and all black lenses. Stealthy and simple! :)

so far it has only been black lenses on black bodies for me. E-PM1 and P20, then E-PL5 with MCG-2 grip and P20, O60 and 40-150mm, then i replaced the P20 with the O25. All black, ninja style :ninja:. Not even thinking about silver lenses...

But if i get the EM5 II, this thread probably gave me the push i needed to get the silver one. That 75mm looks gorgeous on a silver E-M5 II.

For most cameras, I prefer an all black body. OMD and PEN bodies included. It's not necessarily a stealth thing but just aesthetic preference. Plus, I think with the OMD bodies, either black or silver lenses look cooler on black bodies rather than vice versa.

Even with older film bodies, I prefer the way black bodies age with the brassing showing thru the black.

My first camera was the silver EM-5, and I have some silver lenses. The beauty of the retro body was one of the (many) reasons I went with the OMD. I like the way both the silver and black lenses look on it. Now, though, I have a black EM-1, and those silver primes I have now look awful to me.

I am torn between my love of the silver look and an admitted need for stealth, but considering the black bodies seem more prevalent, I'll stick with black on black to avoid that all-black body, all-silver lens combination.

Black E-M5, because I knew it would likely have at least the first part of the HLD-6 attached most of the time, and I didn't like the look of the silver baseplate sandwiched by black. I have since applied a navy skin.

Silver E-P3, because silver was cheaper. Immediately skinned with black for the retro look, and later reskinned in red for a less retro look.

Black E-M1, because I bought it before the silver was released, but I would probably bought black anyway.

My lenses are a mix of silver and black; my 17 and 75 both silver for the simple reason that black had not been released.

Some combinations are prettier than others. Mostly I care what they look like from the back of the camera, not so much from the front.
