For once its great having a camera that can react fast enough to get this - taken with Olympus E-M1 and 75mm

Is the bird actually much closer than the bag? The illusion is great, but the bird blur appears not to be due to motion?

The birds blur is due to flapping wings.
It is actually not on the bag but slightly closer, I.e. Next to the bag.

Interesting! Obviously you were there, so I can't disagree with you.
But I was looking at the blur on its beak and head, plus the fact it casts no shadow anywhere on the wall.

Perhaps you are thinking too hard about this ;)
I can't remember the exact position, luck was involved.

Very, very cool shot. The motion blur of the bird gives the photo life, and the expression of the girl smoking the cigarette is just icing on the cake. Great stuff.
