I've seen some beautiful handmade chairs, but how he worked both the backstay and arm out of one piece without a joint amazes me.

The arm is a separate piece with (I assume) a dowel joint.

edit: I checked the back of the backpost, and there is a screw plug, so that joint has some strong hardware holding it together.

Wow, I wondered about that; the joint is almost entirely invisible due to where the arm attaches into those grain rings of the backstay. An optical illusion, as it were.
