    Long time lurker here...

For street photography, I find that the 2 second delay to turn on the EVF is often enough to miss the shot.

Leaving it on constantly isn't a good answer, as it kills the battery. If the battery is dead, you miss the shot.

What mode is best for street photography?

Get another battery. But a battery swap can lose you a shot as well.

+1 on extra battery, or battery grip.

With the GX1 I just carry an extra battery or two. When a battery gets down to 1 bar, I swap.

Pre-empt what could be a good photo. Half-press the shutter to wake up the camera as you're approaching the scene.

That's what I've been doing (half press). It wakes up the camera, but doesn't turn on the EVF.

There is no best mode really, just make it work quick for you. I never use the LCD for example and never shoot from the hip. Others only do otherwise. So its really quite personal.
