Does anyone know why the E-PL2 uses a BLS-5, while all other pens use the BLS-1? Seems strange that they would switch for one camera and then revert to older style for newer cameras(E-P3,E-PL3, and E-PM1). is there any advantage/disadvantage from one to the other?

Ned explains it pretty well here:

As far as why olympus reverted back?

My guess is North America (and the globe) now have a higher volume of allocated shipments for pens, whereas before models like e-pl2 had close distribution channels with the japanese market during the change in regulation?

Is Olympus reverting to the BLS-1 or getting rid of stock?

I'm in the States, and my E-P3 came with a BLS-1.

I doubt it. One of my bls-1 batteries have a manufacturer date of june 2011.

I believe the rest of the world was always intended to receive the bls-1 battery by de facto. Oly bean counters probably decided to briefly cross distribution channels at the time for cost efficiency. Just my guess.
