Baby tortuga release tonight

My wife and I were at a beach close to where we are living in El Salvador today. An Australian woman noticed I had a camera and mentioned that there would be a release of 175 baby tortugas at 5:00, if we would like to come down to the waterfront.

The lighting was wonderful. It was a far more convenient time for photographs than in the black of night when many release the turtles. I had my Olympus E-M1 with the 11-22mm f2.8/3.5 four thirds lens attached. The people in charge, allowed me to go out beyond the line that they drew in the sand as a restriction for the viewers to stay behind for the safety of the turtles.

It is a wonderful thing to witness. Great images!

Back in 2012 we were staying on Harbor Island, SC during the summer when the turtles hatch. Volunteers walk the beach every morning looking for the tracks of females after they have laid to mark nests and signs that an existing nest has 'boiled' or hatched. They then wait until sunrise and dig up any nests that boiled in the night. There are always a few hatchlings that were not able to dig out for one reason or another. On our last morning we were able to witness the volunteers digging out a nest, counting the hatchlings and empty shells, then releasing the baby turtles to the sea.

Thanks for posting and for bringing back some lovely memory of my time living in the tropics. A school friend of mine did the musical compliment on an international film that was made to bring awareness of the plight of the sea turtles when they come ashore to lay their eggs. Sadly he passed away ages ago. But the project that he did the music for still continues to this day and provides an income for the locals in terms of tourism and looking after the local environment.
