Any plans for a teleconverter?

Do Panasonic or Olympus think much in bigger tele lens options? 600 mm equiv is not always enough and it would be so great to have a longer option but still lightweight... Maybe a mEC1.4 or something like that...

    Anybody knows anything about that?

This has come up a bunch of times on the forum... so far there's no hint or rumor of any TC option for m4/3 from any companies.

There is some constants on the available space in micro 3/4 mounts, which restrict the diameter of the glass and a sound mounting for the elements, that will clear the electric studs arc inside the camera body. They do get in the way........
A full 2x converter would need to be a large glass diameter due to the short distance to the sensor, and although in theory there appears to be just enough space, it is very tight indeed.
More elements and an aspheric surface would work, but the cost rapidly rises. Simple converters are quite easy to make for 35mm, very well known designs, but scaling one to fit the all the existing Olympus and Panasonic lenses would be impossible, so the ones that would work limit the demand, again driving up prices. I did work in optical manufacturing and we made such converters for specialist lenses.

Thanks for the input - I have wondered in the past if there were specific m4/3 design elements that made teleconverters difficult, so it's interesting to hear some specifics.

This is a very impressive level of detail that really helps explain why a :43: TC hasn't been introduced. Thanks for taking the time to drop some science on us.

Thanks Stephen. I had been wondering if there was a physical limitation keeping TCs from being a good fit for m43 but don't have the background to evaluate it. I could understand Olympus or Panasonic not prioritizing it but wondered why we haven't seen a third party do it. It would be nice to see someone try for a 1.4x design, but your analysis doesn't give me much hope!

Thanks to all for your answers and specially Stephen for explaining that. Sorry for asking something that has already been asked.
So I'll have to stay with my legacy lenses for long focal lenghts.
