I have the canon fd 200mm f2.8 lens and it works well for me. I am interested in a little more reach. One lens I see is the fd 300mm f4. Does anyone have experience with this lens and have any recommendations. Comparisons with the 200mm f2.8 would be really great.

The regular fd 300mm f4 is ok, nothing special. The L version is substantially better, it and the Tokina 90mm are the two best overall legacy lenses I have ever tried. The F4L is sharp even wide open with very well controlled CA and becomes Very sharp stopped down just a stop. The non L is going to be softer and have more CA.

I totally agree with this. If you are seriously considering the Canon FD 300 F4, go ahead and spend the extra money for the L version. From the images I've seen online there is a substantial difference.

FWIW, I have both the Oly 75-300 and the Canon FD 300mm f4L; shot them side by side.

What heli-mech says is exactly correct. Wide open I find the F4L about as sharp at the Olympus 75-300 is wide open but obviously faster. One stop down at f5.6 it is quite sharp; better than the Oly when examined at 100%.

That said, I'd buy it for the speed not the sharpness over the Olympus unless you're cropping heavily or printing *very* large. I find it better but not devastatingly so.
