Don't forget about the first photographer to document Yosemite. Edweard Muybridge. I love Muybridge's mammoth plates from the 1860's in that area.

It always made me mad that I couldn't get the EXIF data on any of Ansel Adams' pictures, nor could I do 100% crops to check out if the lens he used was good enough for me.
Albert Bierstadt predated all of them in the late 1800's. His paintings are amazing. Many of the American west. My favorite artist.
I saw at least one of his paintings at the (old) Getty about 25 years ago... they are enormous (and beautiful).
