An island, a beach, and a Panasonic

Discussion in 'Scenic, Architecture, and Travel' started by Luckypenguin, Nov 6, 2011.

  1. A couple of weeks ago I got to spend a weekend at North Stradbroke Island. This is a large sand island which is part of a chain of islands with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Moreton Bay (and beyond that, Brisbane) on the other. With the intention of travelling relatively light (by my normal standards) I took the GH1, 14-140mm, and the 9-18mm. The Panasonic was taken mainly because I prefer it to use with the 9-18mm and because I thought the flip screen would be useful. I did have a few reservations about taking the GH1 to the beach since it's not really my go to camera for vibrant colours, but with a couple of the Color Efex film filters I was quite happy with the results. The B&W images were processed in Silver Efex with a few reprocessed in Color Efex.

Images below with lenses as noted. These were all taken on the ocean-side beaches.

Lovely stuff Nic. I think I commented on Flickr on one with the guys crashed out on the vehicle roof - love that! I generally prefer the color to the B&W in this set, which isn't typical for me, so I'd say you're using Color Efex quite well.

Real nice shots Nic...and good PP choices as well. I especially like 7, 15 and 23.

I lived on the Gold Coast 05/06 and spent some time working on the tan in them parts ( i had a proper job while up there i think!!!!). I like the 4WD shots, they remind me of some good days. 4WD cruising on the sand is soooo much fun, throw in some Queensland sunshine and your on a roll.

Cant wait to go back some time.

    Thanks for posting.

  6. Thanks guys.

Ray, those shots on the roof of the rear canopy were a recovery session from the night before, lol.

There is 4WD access along the majority of the ocean-side beaches from Point Lookout (where we stayed) on the north-east corner all the way down to the southern tip. The toughest bits are the extry and exit tracks onto the beach through the soft sand, otherwise it is easy going. On the first day there was a comedy of errors where a Jeep that got stuck in the soft sand set off a chain reaction that involved two cars trying to pull it out also getting stuck. Unfortunately we'd waved the 4WD in #13 on. I don't think that it was in much danger of ever getting stuck in the sand!
