I am going for 4 days with my astronomy club but have reserved one day (it's a 5.5 almost 300 mile trip from Portland) to image the Alvoid Desert and Steens Mountain area. This will be my third trip to the area but I am still so excited. Landscape and wildlife images abound there. Will be taking our Crosstrek but staying in a wildlife refuge dormatory with cafeteria. This is one of the darkest places in the US and will be taking short exposure astro images as well as daytime stills. Taking only one G9 and the Oly9-18/75-300 to keep things very light as I have a bit of a walking disability and for the day time stuff will be on my own. Leaving Friday around 7 am, hopefully early enough to be on my way before the heavy morning commute starts.

I think it's the "Alvord" Desert.

Beautiful country there! There's a wildlife refuge there that has a tremendous number of birds at certain times of the year. You can drive to the top of Steens, which is a gradual approach on one side and a steep cliff on the other.

Got anything wider than 9mm? Without lights on the horizon, ultra-wide should be awesome! I've never been there at night.
