I recently got back from Alaska and haven't really had the time to properly go through my photos but I'll put a few of my favs up. As usual I travel with my family, none of the shots were planned and I didn't once go out specifically for photos, it's my usual run and gun type photography.

I decided to take what I'm now referring to as my expedition gear.
    Gear: Em5ii, 12-40, pl 100-400, p20
    Film: Olympus XA2, Olympus mju-i

I did take a tripod which I used twice for group shots :|. I wish I was brave enough to leave it at home.

The PL100-400 is exactly as I expected it. It focuses well often on the subject I actually want it on even in busy scenes. I did most of my shots handheld and I'm no wildlife photographer. All in all I'm happy with it, the Oly 300mm does have an edge with IQ but like the m43 system it's good enough for me giving me that extra flexibility.

I have recently been shooting a bit of 35mm film again and boy it's refreshing. I am just using point and shoot type film cams and it's amazing how much more you start really looking at compositions when there is nothing else to think about.

I have lots more which I'm happy with so all in all I call it a win. I have noticed that my processing style has changed a lot of the past few years. I generally prefer the softer photos these days as compared to my more heavily processed images, maybe this has something to do with shooting film again.

And the gear. I also had my Surface Pro 4 with me which fits in the same bag and was excellent to backup to and do full lightroom edits on a decent screen. Previously I have used a Macbook Air and had to re-edit all my photos when I got home on my large wider gamut screen.

Thanks for posting these excellent pictures taken in Alaska. We are going on a cruse to Alaska later this summer and I am taking a similar kit with me. GX8 Pl100-400, P14-140. I am of a mixed mind carrying a second camera and other lenses(Olympus EM1 or additional lenses Oly 43 12-60mm) So, my questions. First were you on a cruse? If so were these pictures taken on the land excursion? and if so where? I for one would be interested in seeing which images were with which lens, and camera settings. Finally any pointers or suggestions as to how to benefit best from this trip (photographically) would be appreciated. The Fox and Bear shots are stunning. I have seen Fox on trails, but never close enough to get a shot like the one you have.

Hi @Ross@Ross . Firstly if you click on the photo it should take you to the flickr which will show the camera and lens I used. I also have an Alaska album up there with more photos but many photos I took on the trip were of course of my family which I didn't put up there. We were considering a cruise but ended up flying in and hiring a minivan (group of 6 of us) and just doing a roadtrip. I really like this method as I can pull over whenever I wish. The place is covered in mountains so I try not to use wide angle lenses for these shots because I like the mountain to dominate my frame.

Half the fun was looking out for moose and scanning the various ponds etc for a male moose set with a mountain background. It actually happened once but I was 30 seconds too late and by the time I pulled up the car it had retreated into the bushes, we saw 13 moose like this. The fox shot was my only cheat shot to be honest, that was in a zoo, everything else was wild.

Places we visited were Seward, Homer, Anchorage, Talkeetna and Denali area, and Fairbanks which was 1700 miles driving in 12 days all up. I normally travel with 2 m43 bodies but this time just the one, yes I probably missed shots like this due to not being bothered changing lenses. I am really considering something like a lx100,rx100,tz100 as a second body. My wife did take a Fz1000 which worked out really well.

    Hope that helps

Siftu, thanks for responding. What a great idea, taking a land trip like you did in Alaska. I never thought of doing that and I am now committed to the cruise but there may well be another time to do that. The Fox shot was in a zoo, I almost guessed it had to be becasue getting close enough even with the PL100-400, for a full face shot is a daunting task and but could work, it your in a blind. I will check out your FLicker site later today. Thanks again,

Very nice set of photos. We will be doing a glacier cruise out of Seward next week and a road trip into Denali in September and hope to get a lot of pics. You have to get out of Anchorage to see Alaska.

Beautiful set!! I have been curious if there are any hiccups using the 100-400 on an Olympus body, but judging by your photos I am guessing it works just fine?

No problems with it's usage. Actually really really happy with it's AF abilities. I do notice some vignette when I'm processing the images and I'm not sure if LR and DxO have to update to fix this. Also not sure if that happens on a panasonic body.

That accidental double exposure photo is one of the best photos I saw this year. It belongs in some magazine.

I just got back from Alaska as well and I would say you need all water resistant lenses and bodies. It's very rainy in many places and I didn't end up using anything other then my em5ii and the 12-40 and 40-150 pro lenses. Wish I had somthing longer for that trip. I was on land except a day cruise and a kayak day.

Thanks for the input. I am taking my EM1 with a 12-60 Oly EM l and the 100-400 Panasonic Leica lens. I want to travel lite but I am considering taking my GX 8 as well for the long lens and the Em1 for the 12-60. Both outfits are water resistant, but I am not. I sure hope its not rain when I am there.

I must admit it was my favorite too. It hasn't got much flickr action which is quite common for my favorites :) it's the only image I printed at 13" x19" from the trip

Great post! Thanks for sharing. Love the film shots too!

Our family is off to Alaska in August for a week-long cruise on a small boat (out of Juneau) and then driving from Anchorage to Talkeetna then south towards Seward for another week. Planning to take two GX8s (great cameras!) and either the 12-35/2.8 or 12-60mm and 35-100mm. When I bought my second GX8 the 12-60mm was free as a kit (fantastic lens so far; just test shots to make sure it works ok).

I prefer wider landscapes and I'm not so interested in "reach" though I know Alaska is huge, so I hope the 35-100/2.8 suffices. My wife is taking the GX85/14-140mm. I'm also planning to take my Ricoh GR.
