This is another from Jo and Paul’s wedding, and like the gate image, this was just one of those scenarios you kinda stumble across.
This is a small cluster of trees behind The Great Hall at Mains, and although I had spotted it on previous occasions whilst photographing there, this time there was something that caught my eye.
It streamed through the trees and gave the whole setting a fairytale atmosphere. A scene I really couldn’t pass up.
You can see where the sun is, and how it is striking our couple. My main goal was to light Jo and Paul sufficiently to balance out the ambient, without overding it, and therefore losing the accent lighting provided by the Sun on Paul. If you are wondering just how dark Jo and Paul were, take a look at the trees. Jo and Paul were certainly dark, although not quite silhouettes, but close enough.
My key light was an Elinchrom ELB400 firing through an 80x80xm folding softbox at an output of 5.0.
I had a second ELB400 firing through a honeycombed stripbox frame right, which really only provided enough fill to stop Jo’s dress from going dark down her back. It was set to an output of 4.3.
Not an awful lot to it. This image was more about allowing the sun to do the heavy lifting, and supplementing it with flash, without taking anything from the atmosphere of the setting.
