.... to go out today in absolutely foul weather, except I was fed up with being indoors with nothing to photograph and looking out of the window at the horizontal rain. So I went to the hide at the local reserve and practised manual focusing with the E-M5 and Canon 400mm f5.6L. Just to add to the difficulty I also bolted on the Kenko TC1.4x.

Struggling with the focus through the rain and poor light but a couple of long distance ducks and a nearby Chaffinch - RAW files already binned!

Moral of the story - deliberately going out to photograph wildlife in poor weather should be left to the experts!

    Ubiquitous Mallard pair:

    PC223380.

    Shoveler drake:

    PC223265.

    Wigeon Drake:

    PC223376.

    Male Chaffinch:

    PC223363.

Pretty poor quality but a little better than the same lens combo with AF on the Canon 7D under the same conditions - and more reach of course.

You've made a chaffinch look intelligent. What's not to like?

Im not sure what an expert would do in this case either. Yes, some of your shots lack dedail due to backlighting/ lack of lighting, but a pro would have the same problem. Really, the only thing i think you can do is to make sure whatrver little light you have is atleast behind, but sometimes even thats not possible.

I like your photos regardless... and the last one has nice detail actually
