Last weekend I went to Lille (north of France)
A rather grey and sombre city.
Quite hard taking decent photos too because the buildings are very old , and there are nearly no straight buildings to be found

Below a selection of some images :
    (all photos are on wolf666.smugmug.com)

Let me know which ones you prefer

Congratulations on your ability to find some beauty in what is often said to be an ugly city. You posted some very nice shots. You have managed to capture a flavour of Lille without allowing the ugliness to intrude.

Indeed, it isn't really a beautiful city (far from it) and the weather was grey and dull too (mostly)
I think it'll be the only time in my life i'll visit it...

However the restaurant where we went was very good (and unique) and I did notice that Lille has a very young population...
But many homeless people too, in the morning i saw a few in every street...

If anybody has seen this movie, it sais enough (nice movie by the way)

I like the way the colours pop on the Cafe de Foy photo, but the picture of the homeless person really does capture a feeling of loneliness.

    Yea, especially with the dog
Converting the photo to B/W and adding some grain fits great imo

Thanks, the movie looks fun.

The choices of towns/cities in France that are a short distance from the UK include Lille, Calais and Boulogne. To a visitor, Calais is a little like Lille, a mostly ugly town with some pretty areas and the occasional good restaurant. But Boulogne is a pleasure, with the old walled town being especially photogenic.

Perhaps Boulogne is not so convenient if travelling from Belgium ...

Yea the movie is quite good.

And it was just a short one day trip we did (1h30 drive)
One day was more then enough :)
