It’s funny, inspiration can come from the strangest places. This is a gate at the back of the Great Hall at Mains. The Hall itself has huge potential for photography opportunities, both inside and out. But moving just that little further afield means we can get something unique.

This gate was spotted by Wayne, who was assisting me on this particular wedding. I already had a few ideas, and we had several in the bag using the pool and the beautiful little clearing amongst the trees. This was one of those opportunities that just presents itself as you move from one location to another. We were simply going to go through the gate to get back to the house, and Wayne nudged me to say, give it a go.

The setting was fairly tight, particularly if I wanted to keep the ambience and not over-light either side. I wanted to ensure that Jo and Paul stood out against the woodwork of the door, and had that “pop” to them, without making the area either side too dark.

I used an Elichrom ELB400 firing through a honeycombed 30x140cm stripbox to my immediate left. It was set to fire at an output of 5.0.

And that was it, just the one light source. But here, it worked exactly as needed, keeping the atmosphere of the setting.
