First time doing a longer trip by car in Europe, from Stockholm in Sweden to Tuscany in Italy. Also the first time doing a trip with both our kids (1 and 3 years old). To make it a little bit easier we took the car train from Hamburg and decided to stay four nights in Val Gardena (Selva) in the Dolomites for some light hiking. I also brought my bike to experience Italian mountain passes and the rolling hills in Tuscany.

Travelling with kids makes it difficult to concentrate on taking photos, I ended up with a lot of shots of backs of people walking. I brought my GM1 with the Panasonic 14 mm lens on some of my bike rides and it worked ok (even though I would have liked something that could slip in and out of the jersey pocket a bit easier).

Both the Dolomites and Tuscany are wonderful places and I hope to go back to both again in the future!

I've said this before, but I'll say it again Magnus: I really enjoy your photos, not only these above but in general too.

@mkallstrom@mkallstrom I completely understand how family vacations can frustrate photographic desires but they do often present opportunities to photograph your spouse and children that might otherwise be missed in day-to-day life. You did a great job of capturing them and the adventure.

You are right, it's just a big contrast to how I would have taken photographs on a trip like this a few years ago.

Enjoy! Bolzano seems like a good location for exploring the mountains in the area.

    It's a love/hate relationship for me :)

Brilliant shots. Loved them all. Your technique of putting small people (aka children!) in the foreground of super wide shots really is very effective.

    Lovely pictures!
Can you tell us some more about the car train? We usually go by car through Europe but the last time the traffic was a nightmare and roads were closed and I thought I will never again put myself in this position with small kids in the car. How long was the train ride? Expensive? Where did you get off?

We went from Hamburg to Innsbruck with ÖBB and from Verona to Hamburg with UEX. ÖBB was a better experience (more modern train and better breakfast) and also cheaper, €350 one way for the car transport and our own sleeping compartment. It took 12-14 hours but the train departed in the evening and we spent most of the time on the train sleeping. I guess it's not exactly cheap but we figured that we would need one night of accommodation anyway and that it was nice to get out of the car for a while.

I would have no problem to use the car train again if there is a suitable route for the end destination.
