Thanks for the definition. I used the "term" jetties because that is what they are commonly called here in my little world .... For clarity's sake if I may add to @PacNWMike definition, the Macquarie Dictionary, Australia's dictionary, defines a jetty as

/ˈdʒɛti/ (say 'jetee)
noun (plural jetties)
1. a wharf or landing pier.

2. the piles or wooden structure protecting a pier.

3. Obsoletemole3 (def. 1).

[Middle English gette, from Old French jetee, noun use of feminine past participle of jeter throw]
and a pier as

pier
/pɪə/ (say pear)
noun 1. a structure built out into the water to serve as a landing place for ships, and, sometimes, protect a harbour; a breakwater; jetty.

2. such a structure used as a pleasure promenade.

3. one of the supports of a span of a bridge or of two adjacent spans.

4. a square pillar.

5. a portion of wall between doors, windows, etc.

6. a pillar or post on which a gate or door is hung.

7. a support of masonry or the like for sustaining vertical pressure.

[Middle English per(e), from Medieval Latin pera]
In the context of this thread I would suggest that the structures or parts there of fitting the definitions of at least #1 in the definition of a jetty are appropriate as are structures or parts there of fitting #1 in the definition of pier. Does that sound reasonable?

I hope that clarifies it for everyone and it fits everyone's understanding of a "jetty."

I have also amended the title to cover all three "labels" or types. I hope that covers all English speaking options at least :)

Regards
Andrew

and for amusement's sake the Macquarie Dictionary defines in part a wharf as ...

/wɔf/ (say wawf)

noun (plural wharves or wharfs)
1. a structure built on the shore of, or projecting out into, a harbour, stream, etc., so that vessels may be moored alongside to load or unload or to lie at rest; a quay; a pier.
So it seems that wharf's would also be appropriate in this thread, more so as jetties are wharfs, as are they landing piers :)

So it would seem that my photo of Rodel is clearly a jetty while the one of the Crannog is a stretch.
