72 Hour Post Processing Challenge #658

For this challenge I only have a jpg file. This will be a good challenge anyway as it was taken through a thick piece of glass in the shade.
I had been copying some photos the day before using jpg only and forgot to set it back to my usual jpeg and raw.

the contest will end at 12:00 P.M. on 4/28 AZ time.

----------
Post-Processing Challenge Rules
  1. The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
  2. Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
  3. Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
  4. At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
  5. The Winner of the challenge is honored as the Master of the next Challenge.
Notes:
  • Images provided by Challenge Masters must be their own. They are posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; not to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.
  • "Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.
  • Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.
  • Compositing is allowed, provided the use of the donor image does not violate any licensing or copyright restrictions.
  • As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.
  • If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honor passes to the next Runner-up.

Adobe Camera Raw plus Photoshop. Started by making changes in camera raw to get the density and contrast in the direction I wanted. Then into photoshop to paint/brighten the eyes, and add repeated layers with selective adjustments to contrast, brightmess, saturation, burning in, colour, vignetting etc. Kept going until I got to what I was looking for by experimenting with blend modes & layer density. Cropped and added a border, sunshine filter and another warm-up filter in ON1.

Its amazing Richard!

Trial and error. Mostly error.

Trying to get into the habit of using smart objects and lots of layers so I can go totally over the top as usual, then come back five minutes later and back it off by 90% :)

It's hard not to feel sad for aged captive tigers, but in the wild, it would have been toast years ago.

The challenge has come to a close and I had a few thoughts about it.
This image at first glance of the out of camera jpg, looks terrible and one might just shudder and leave it alone.
To me, this is the fun and value of learning how to work in the various software suites to improve a photo.
Take something that is lacking and make it better or great. It never gets old and there is always something new to learn.
There are many nice entries here. I have a few general comments. I feel that the versions that darkened the highlight side to keep detail look better.
From using the border function in Silver efex I noticed that the program puts the border on as an overlay which can make a crop that was perfect appear too tight. I did not downgrade any entries for this , just passing on what I have noticed about it when using it myself.
I hope you all had a good time on this one.

Now for the results!

Winner is Richard C entry #1 excellent work on a difficult file. #2 entry was also interesting.

2nd place Kai 1 entry #2 the tight crop is different and grabs your attention.

3rd place A tie between Protapic and Zeus 1 - both very nice.

I also want to mention ZappDJR #2 and Bosse Be #1, also very well done.
