I've only started shooting RAW images since the start of the year and because of lockdown they've been test shots so I don't have much of a back catalogue.

I would like to enter a JPEG image for the post processing competition but due to my ignorance I don't know if your editing software supports JPEG. Whilst I've uploaded a RAW and a JPEG image to Dropbox, if possible I'd like the JPEG image to be the first choice for post-processing. This picture has been taken through catch fencing and at maximum focal length and aperture and I'd love to see what post processing is possible to do with it.

However if your software is not designed to edit JPEGs then I've also uploaded one of my RAW "test" shots to see what can be recovered from a cloudy overcast day.

JPEG and RAW can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nviui99x1nn13al/AAByohYZJxVkbKebnwfksESIa?dl=0

The Challenge closes at 20:00 GMT on Sunday 21st of March 2021.

60-Hour Post-Processing Challenge Rules
The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
  1. Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
  2. Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
  3. At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
  4. The Winner of the challenge is honoured as the Master of the next Challenge
Notes:

  • Any/all source images used for the challenge must be the Challenge Master's own images. They are posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; not to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.
  • "Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.
  • Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.
  • As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.
  • If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honour passes to the next Runner-up.

Nice action shot! Just upped the saturation and tried to sharpen a bit.

Great.

Opened in Adobe Camera Raw. Used the new enhance feature to increase resolution. Then denoised, sharpened, neutralised colour balance, added a vignette, some extra background blur, got rid of head on horizon and added a border. Added +5 saturation to reds and blues for extra pop.

Richard you've already managed to blow my mind and test my ignorance to the full !
I use Photoshop Elements and if I want to edit a Raw file it automatically loads Adobe Camera Raw presumably as a plug-in. Jpegs go straight into Elements without loading ACR. Could I ask what I would need to do to load a JPEG into ACR?

I think I have access to software you perhaps don't have.

I browsed to the image in Adobe Bridge then right clicked and opened it in ACR.

You can also just open it in Photoshop and go to Filter>Camera Raw which is the same engine, but it doesn't look like the new 'enhance image' functionality is available in camera raw (via photoshop) yet, nor is it in lightroom (yet....the version built in to Lightroom doesn't do a fat lot unless it's a Fuji RAW file).

Bridge, Photoshop and Lightroom are all included with the standard subscription (£9.99 monthly if you don't need tons of cloud storage).

Thanks ever so much for the detailed reply Richard 👍... something else for me to try in the future.

No problem. The subscription isn't to everyone's taste, but it's kept bang up to date with very regular updates and upgrades. I'm an amateur with very few other interests. There are alternatives, but none that I've seen come with free software upgrades so I believe it pans out price wise. Capture One looks excellent too.

Enhance.../Super Resolution is currently only available in Camera Raw. Right click on the working image or the filmstrip thumbnail.

A little bit of searching came up with this article that mentions opening jpgs into Camera Raw from Elements.

Thanks for this Hendrik.

I've just had a look at the link and it does what you say - I've learned something else today. It's another case of having the functionality but ignoring why it's there and what it does

Similar to what Richard did using LR 6.14 on jpeg file, but also gave a touch Topaz Sharpen AI love just to rider and front number to correct for motion blur and bring better sharpness to main focus of picture.

All exposure work (other than the man behind the mask) accomplished in Adobe Camera Raw. Includes two linear gradients (top & bottom) and an elliptical gradient.
Some rearranging in Photoshop.
Sharpening of the lead figure in Topaz Sharpen AI.

As @BosseBe passed up the opportunity to post a black-and-white edit, I thought it appropriate that I do the "usual" thing.
