----------

Post-Processing Challenge Rules
  1. The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
  2. Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
  3. Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
  4. At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
  5. The Winner of the challenge is honored as the Master of the next Challenge.

Notes:
  • Images provided by Challenge Masters must be their own. They are posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; not to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.
  • "Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.
  • Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.
  • Compositing is allowed provided the use of the donor image does not violate any licensing or copyright restrictions.
  • As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.
  • If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honor passes to the next Runner-up.

Nice shot. Edited jpeg file in DxO PL2, minimal chanages (mainly increased contrast, added a bit of ClearView), exported as Tiff, then cropped and tweaked tiff file in Elements (more contrast, using ON1 Effects increased Dynamic contrast and Color a tad) then downsized and saved as jpeg.

Edited in DT3.4. Some messing around with relative brightness and contrast between the five different layers of stuff in the image.

Entry #2: Added background haze (Nik Color Efex "Haze") to entry #1 since Darek indicated the day was hazy. [I should learn how to do gradients and masks-- what I did was added a layer, applied "fog" to it, then selected the foreground, feathered and erased the selection-- so terribly inelegant :( ]

To push this look first added a "60's" hald clut in RT to head in this direction along with auto WB that was a bit warmer. Then in Gimp used Kodachrome filter in nik-cfx at about 38% opacity (I think)...

LR 6.14 wouldn't open the.orf file - too old I guess. Ran the .jpeg through Nik Colour Efex using the contrast colour filter, then into LR, 6 x 3 crop, increased clarity and contrast, a graduated gradient on the sky to improve clarity, and a mid gradient filter on the trees in the middle, to improve saturation and try to lighten bit.

And a Nik B & W fine art edit, then some added vibrance, reduced clarity in LR, and noise reduction.

...

Probably it's too late, but I've added link to .tif (exported from Olympus Workspace) in the first post.
Maybe it would be good to include also .tif images in general.

Thanks for posting that image Darek - your winter landscape is a real mood lift for those of us stuck at home under COVID lockdown !

I'm another fan of landscapes in the "rule of thirds" !

For this I tone mapped in Aurora HDR 2018 (Now free to download as a way to tempt you to pay for the updated 2020 version) and did a dodge and burn on those wonderful highlights.

Best wishes to you all - Paul C

and because no snowy landscape can escape being reinterpreted in black and white - her is my second reworking to turn a sunny blue-sky day in to a midwinter chill as taken with a large-format film camera!

This was done with Silver Efex pro 2 - the free "Google Era" download version using boosted contrast, an S-curve, vignetting, and a "cut film" border to make it look like Darek had been freezing out there with a wooden camera in the countryside followed by a long task in the darkroom !

best wishes again - Paul C

PS Todd - you get my vote - so please can you give us all a bit more on how you set about getting the "Kodachrome" look -
you absolutely nailed the look of my Dad's 1960's slide cellection !

No probs - one of the downsides of using software, which I accept. Am going to check out PSE and see if the updated versions opens newer .orf files, and how much it costs.

Did some basic edits in Lr, ie, highlights/shadows/contrast/darken sky/darken foreground/crop. In Ps filter gallery, added an oil paint filter with lightness set to maximum to introduce some specular highlights, then stacked field blur on top and played with the settings until I got some bokeh balls on the highlights I'd just created, then masked these out other than on the water. Changed the colours with a gradient map. Using ON1, added a canvas texture and a simple black border.
