Thanks to everyone who entered.

Rather than individual critiques, here are the qualities that I'm looking for and comparing when attempting to judge one of these competitions. They are along the lines of things that I focus on in my own workflow, although it's constantly evolving as I learn more stuff. I keep an open mind. I like creative use of colour - but to me, grain looked much nicer when it came out of a developing tank courtesy of Mr Kodak.

These are my priorities - you may or may not agree with them.

1) Crop.
2) Use of colour - either as accurate as possible, or creative, or black and white or luts, presets... it doesn't matter to me - whatever looks nice, this isn't photojournalism.
3) Tone (brightness/exposure/lightness/darkness) and contrast (not too much, not too little).
4) Control of noise. No pixel peeping here - but some cameras' JPEG engines and PP software can do a particularly rotten job.
5) Sharpness - please - not too much.
6) Local adjustments - dodging, burning, brightening, vignetting, blurring etc, etc - you get the picture. If a sky's nasty and you can steal one from elsewhere - why not?
7) Suppressing/eliminating distractions.

So - to the results:

Winner, the prize being the inconvenience of not taking part in the next game: @Hendrik #1
Highly coveted second spot: @relic #2
Kick in the teeth third spot (they know where you live): @BosseBe #2

Hello to @jmkubler - hope you come out to play again next time.

Hendrik's turn to set the challenge.

Just woke up to the news. Thanks, Richard. I’ll look about for a suitably scuzzy image to give you all a run for your money. Back in a bit.
