Hi there everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome to the group!

I didn't want to wait too long to submit the next photo for editing since we're all stuck at home with (likely) TONS of time on our hands! My submission for the contest is another waterfall shot (keeping with the theme!) This image was captured along I-84 on the Oregon side of the Columbia river. If you've never been there, you should definitely plan a trip. There are tons of waterfalls and hiking trails scattered everywhere. I've been there at different times of the year and the images are definitely better (I think) when there are leaves on the trees!

I'm not normally a fan of people in my photos, but in this case I think they actually help to show the scale of this massive waterfall. So feel free to leave them in or remove them!

48 hours from now would be Friday night--and even though I'm not able to go out and have any kind of fun, let's call the cut-off for entries Saturday, April 11th by noon, okay?

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for this image!

I put the image files up on a shared folder that you can access here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1YGNGW66ZCLmVar8jpiOiFzFXLwRW9eY5

You have a choice between the CR2 RAW file or an uncompressed JPEG.

Good luck!

48-Hour Post-Processing Challenge Rules
  1. The Challenge Master provides an image or images to be "improved" upon by way of post-processing, as well as a closing date for entries.
  2. Entrants are to post their entries, visible in this thread, at a resolution of 1000 to 1600 pixels in the longest dimension, prior to the closing date.
  3. Each entrant is allowed two entries in the Challenge.
  4. At the close of the Challenge, the Challenge Master will select a Winner and Runners-up.
  5. The Winner of the challenge is honoured as the Master of the next Challenge.

Notes:
Any/all source images used for the challenge must be the Challenge Master's own images. They are posted solely for the purpose of this Challenge; not to invite critique or criticism nor for other uses. If Entrants post their entries at a photo sharing site, they should credit the owner of the original image.
  • "Improve" is a subjective term, and may include many creative ideas, as well as traditional "fixing". The Challenge Master agrees that Entrants may make any changes they deem fit in their entries.
  • Entrants are strongly encouraged to share the tools and techniques used for their entries, however this is not a requirement for entry.
  • As we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The Challenge Master is encouraged (but not required) to state the criteria used to decide upon a Winner. While we may not all agree with the result, the Challenge Master's decision is final. Please refrain from posting adverse comment.
  • If the Winner is unable to post a new Challenge within five days, the honor passes to the next Runner-up.

Lovely shot. I "edited" the raw file in DxO PL2. I used "edited" in quotes because what I did was quite negligible.

Entry #2: I applied Kodachrome 64 emulation to entry #1 using DxO Filmpack 5, added a slight amount of toning and slightly increased the green.

Difficult to come up with specific 'improvements' to what is already a fine picture.

Tinkered with colour, dodged, burned, vignetted and added a little drama to the base of the waterfall. all adjustments made in LR/PS.

Thanks @WhidbeyLVR I found another smaller troll to bring out, (I relly think 3:2 portrait is too thin, so cropped to 4:3):

Sorry for the delay in announcing the winner here. We had some stuff come up that needed to get dealt with earlier in the day.

It was a ton of fun seeing all the creative ways you guys tackled this image! For me, the most challenging thing with the shot is all the extreme contrast in it. So my favorites here (other than the trolls and waterfall skier, obviously!) were treatments where this contrast was reeled back a bit so that the image looked more like I remember it being when I took it.

1st Place: @RichardC - I love the character you added in the second image, but it's the first that won this for you. The luminance values in the image are rich and create depth--without being overly "crunchy" or "contrasty." Your unique color treatment, though, was subtle and realistic and made it stand out from the rest.
2nd Place: @Tenpenny - Like RichardC, you reeled back on contrast and made the image simple remarkable. Beautifully done.
3rd Place: @Robert Davidson - I'm not sure what it is about the editing but the foliage is absolutely mesmerizing! Seriously, I could stare at it for hours!

Thank you to everyone who participated. Honestly, this was a ton of fun. Thanks everyone!

Thank you very much. I didn't do that much to the picture. Hardest decision was whether or not to leave the people in, but they give a good reference to the size of the waterfall if they are a bit more obvious.

48 hour PP challenge #542 will be up in a couple of minutes.
