This is an excellent mirror lens. It is sharp at both close and long focusing distances. It is manual focus but the mount has electric contacts so it transmits lens information and it also enables focus assist.

A couple of samples:

That flower is amazingly sharp, and I love the way the out of focus area appears both distantly and closely. Great shop!

I took my new lens out for the first time today. Focusing is difficult (IBIS would make it a lot easier). The lens is much more solid feeling than I expected. The focus ring could use more throw when it gets close to infinity, as a very small move results in a dramatic shift in focus. Here are some samples:

I'm happy with the images, when I can nail the focus. I used a tripod and my phone as a remote shutter release with my G6. I didn't apply any post processing to the images, just re-sized and cropped. I'm happy with the lens for the $200 I payed for it.

Increased the contrast in LR a little.

The one with all the "donuts" in the background is because it was wet asphalt reflecting sunlight. Usually the lens doesn't show it that much.

How does the lens compare against the Oly 70-300? Any first impressions?

I've only used the Panasonic 100-300. The lenses is smaller and lighter, but slower and harder to focus (since it is manual). Lower contrast too.

Both lenses work better with close subjects than distant ones. But I've run into that with every long telephoto lens I've tried (maybe it's me...)

no, its atmosphere ... its the limiting issue and why a bajigga telephoto won't make images better than simply getting closer.

A quick google on the subject brought up this link
http://www.wolfwillow.com/Photo/WPhoto/PhotoTopics/WPTDealing_with_long_telephotos.html

Once upon a time photographers understood this ... but now more people have top notch gear who have never had any training in photography.

such is ife

The Zuiko 70-300 is easier to use because you can zoom back if you can't find your subject at 300. My first impressions are there is little difference in good lighting other than the occasional donut bokeh. The zoom gives better contrast of course.

Some newer samples. Those out-of-focus donuts do get in the way.

I was planning on shooting multiple exposures, but found out I could only do a double with easy assist in the EM5. Bulb mode and a lens cap next time if I get another chance,

The September eclipse.

A quirky lens, but quite fun occasionally. I usually increase contrast and lower shadows to get reasonable live view. Easy to fix contrast in post.

This and mirror lenses in general seem to be strongest when used on plants. I think a big reason is that nobody cares if you miss focus by 5mm or so, whereas when photographing anything with an eye they care a lot. The donut bokeh can also look unusually attractive on foliage at certain scales. Also it's a numbers game, it's easy to take a thousand flower pictures and present the 5 best. People and other animals don't have that patience.

I liked the framing of the ferry pic, but it wasn't as sharp as it could have been.

Autofocus would help for these!

I tried a lot of portrait-type photos, and lack of critical focus eliminated most of them. But this one seems like I nailed it.
