i have owned the 25 for a while and LOVE it. im torn between the 12 and 17- now please disregard the focal length as i have feet and can adjust accordingly also ignore price- its unimportant to me as well... how do the lenses stack up to the 25 optically- ive heard nothing but praise for the 12, but ive heard VERY mixed reviews of the 17. HELP!

  2. Honestly, your feet aren't going to make a 12mm look like a 17 nor a 17mm look like a 12.

Agreed, the concept of "zooming with your feet" is thrown about a bit too casually around here.

From whom have you heard "VERY" (emphasis yours) mixed reviews of the 17mm? Almost every review I read is glowing ... I would have no hesitation about buying the lens had I read the online reviews first.

Everyone who bothers to weigh in on a discussion, IMHO, deserves to be thanked. I doubt many of us respond well to a sarcastic lack of appreciation for our thought and effort.

All of the early (late last year) reviews stated it was only slightly better than the old 17 and most reported large variations in QC from specimen to specimen. Most outlets agreed it wasn't worth the premium price and didn't deserve to be mentioned alongside the 12.

Early reviews were mixed. Since then I've seen more positive reviews. I've owned two copies of the 17/1.8, and both are excellent. After hearing complaints of decentering, I checked both copies thoroughly. I was pleased to find both are just fine.

Very different lenses for different uses and people.
I picked the 17/1.8 over the other 2 (owned the 12 and sold it and had a chance to play with both the 17 and 25 before purchasing it) and I love it.
    YMMV

I'm just wanting to know if the glass is in the same league as the 12/25/45/75 combo I'm eyeing. Sounds like all QC has been sorted. Consider one ordered. And maybe a 60 now that its $399...

sorry... I am with lucky penguin on this... 12 and 17 are two very different focal lengths... so choosing between them on some ill defined quality argument is a bit pointless in my opinion.

I have passed on buying the 12 because I don't like the focal length. I do have the 17 ( and the 14, 20, 25, 45 and 75). The 17 is a very fine lens, though it doesn't have the 'wow' factor of the 25 and the 75...and it has a noticeably different field of view from both the 14 and the 20, never mind the 12

this is what I have got out of the 17 so far

Off topic for a second. How do does 4% cashback offers work? Do they discount 4% off the price at checkout upon purchase?

I have all of Olympus's primes from the 12mm to the 75mm. I love the 12mm and the 25mm but am still unsure about the 17mm. It's a new focal length for me and am still getting used to it. I don't regret buying it at all. Just a lot different than the other two. It produced great images but the 25mm is sharper. It is just not wide enough in some situations and the 12mm is just to wide at times which is why I purchased the 17mm. Now that I have it I doubt I will sell it but it does not excite me like the other two. Of the bunch I love the 12, 25 and 75mm.
