I recently tried 2:3 aspect ratio on my gx7 and gm1 and I think it is more enjoyable to use because of the greater size of the image in both the lcds and evf of the gx7.

It is inconsequential, but I'm curious what the crop factor would be in 2:3 aspect ratio.

    Is it 2.2x?

    Thanks.

I'm unsure about Panasonic cameras however with Olympus if you shoot 2:3 and use RAW you still get the full uncropped image (Handy if you're using the viewfinder with a bar at the bottom rather than overlay).

Huh? Surely 3:2 is cropped from 4:3 so how can it be bigger?

The image on either of the screens is bigger because the screens are 2:3 rather than 3:4.

    ^ that.

The EVF in the E-M1 is 4:3 however if you use it with the settings bar at the bottom it displays black bars on the sides, setting 3:2 changes it to sort of full screen. If you the EVF with the settings overlayed then there's no reason to change the crop.

I hadn't checked the RAW files yet so I'm not sure if they are uncropped with Panasonic.

As mentioned, these are the DIAGONAL crop factors with the exception of the last one.

In the real world such simple comparisons between formats with differing aspect ratios is useful only as a very rough guide. There are 3 main "crop factors" when comparing m4/3 to FF:

    • native aspect ratios = 2x
    • both at 3:2 = 2.1x
    • both at 4:3 = 1.8x

Which applied depends on what aspect ratio you will use for the final print.
