I plan on buying the EM-5 in the near future (the EM-1 is beyond my finances), and would like to know if the size of the 12-40 lens will interfere with the auto-focus assist lamp. Also is the lens too big, in general, for the EM-5?

You really should use a grip on an EM-5 when using this lens.
The AF assist light will be blocked for subjects closer than about 2 feet.
