    My New Monitor: Dell U2311H

I had the U2311H for a long while—great monitor. The 2711 is the better panel, but the price difference is massive and the 2311 is good value because of it. Eventually upgraded to an iMac (uses the same panel as the 2711 Dell), but not before convincing a friend to get the 2311.

Showcase Panasonic Leica 45mm f/2.8 Macro Elmarit

Was gifted this lens last week—I'm not typically a macro guy (in the way of insects and/or flowers), but I do dig details and it's been pretty great for that. The 45mm FL is also a nice change from the 20mm. Moss by Matt Silverlock, on Flickr Wood by Matt Silverlock, on Flickr...

How much gear do you carry around?

I sold my 5D2 + primes so I could travel light. All I take with me in my satchel bag is my GF1 + 20mm. No need for other lenses or accessories; defies the point, really.

    Pictures of Panasonic GF3 leaked

He certainly is. We [the people on this forum] represent a tiny fraction of Panasonic's customer base. The GF3 is clearly targeted towards travellers and the Japanese market, and at that size, it'll probably do pretty well.

Panasonic GF1 Software - crappy customer care

Panasonic purchases licenses from this company, and provides it with their cameras. They do not own the software and therefore cannot freely re-issue it at whim. The license holder in your case is the original purchaser, and therefore it's hardly Panasonic's fault that he/she didn't provide the...

Yep, I convert as well, for the same reasons as Pelao. Single files that don't rely on side-car data are worth having.

500px is Photography Some of you may of heard of it already, but it's a new photo-sharing site. I've just signed up, and what drew me to it was the UI: it's all about the photos (and it's what Flickr should be). It seems to be pretty stable so far, despite them getting a lot of traffic...

Great opportunity for Sigma to make a portrait lens

It's bigger when you think about how it ends up when cropped. 25mm is noticeably (if not significantly) tighter than 20mm on MFT.
  19. sherlock

What is your FFL (favourite focal length)?

35mm. My 35L made it so, and my Panny 20 f1.7 is close (in terms of framing).

    New Panasonic G3

I agree. I have the feeling the GF3 will be a natural progression from the GF2, but if it has the same sensor as the G3, then it would be a nice fit. I'm not fussed about an articulating screen either way, and the EVF is nice but not necessary. As it stands, the G3 is my "eventual"...

What do you think of the G3's looks?

This about sums up how I feel about it too. I'm not a huge fan of the viewfinder hump (an offset, X100-style 'finder would have been great), but I like the overall dimensions and the curves. It's taken some good cues from the GF2, which I actually like the shape of.

    mFT v DSLR

It's not heat — it would be if you hacked it and could record longer, but it's not currently the problem. Further, the whole 'short clips are bad' thing doesn't make sense. It's very rare to shoot continuously for that length of time.

    mFT v DSLR

If you want to pixel peep, DPReview has a great tool you can use for this — their review of the GF2 will let you pick other cameras to compare it with. I'd compare it with the GF2, GH2 (best MFT camera, but bigger), the D3100 and the Pentax K-r. For all intents and purposes though, go through...

Does Lightroom run well in a MacBook Air 2010

Can't help myself — this lens is so good. This is also a good example of how little distortion the 20mm has (I shoot RAW) — I find +2 distortion correction in LR does the trick every time for fixing any apparent barrel distortion. Way better than my 35L, which certainly had a bit more dialled in...

    RAW converters - created equal?

They do, in a way — Lightroom uses its own in-built version of Camera RAW, whereas Photoshop uses the shared Camera RAW library (that is upgraded on its own). And no, RAW creators are definitely not created equal. Some argue that Canon & Nikon's solutions handle their proprietary RAW files...

Using the 20mm prime lens (newbie questions)

The real answer is more to do with pixel density, than sensor size. It's just that smaller sensors typically happen to be more dense. More pixels per square inch + hand shake = more blur in your image.

Micro Four Thirds Lens Rumors and Speculation

I'd definitely jump on a 12mm prime — there's definitely a market for something like that. Wide-angle is the new black, or so they say. A 35mm or 50mm prime would also fit the bill (I like a three-prime kit), especially if it was a pancake. Voigtlander does MF 35mm, 40mm & 50mm pancakes in...
  44. sherlock

Using the 20mm prime lens (newbie questions)

No, exposure doesn't change. It's just that you might not want to shoot at f16 if you can help it — bring up your shutter speed & open your aperture a bit (f/11 is good) to manage any potential diffraction. Keep in mind diffraction isn't going to matter too much unless your printing A3 or bigger.
  45. sherlock

Using the 20mm prime lens (newbie questions)

Not at all. I mean, you wouldn't want to stop down to f/22 anyway, even on APS-C (diffraction), but anything down to f/16 would be acceptable, f/11 preferably.
  46. sherlock

Does Lightroom run well in a MacBook Air 2010

Sure does. The SSD makes it fly. RAW files with lots of history and/or added grain & adjustment brushes will show a bit of sluggishness, but nothing insane. I run LR (albeit rarely) on my 11" Air when I'm on the road — usually I prefer to do it at home on my proper rig w/ a calibrated monitor...

How to take good B&W photos

Definitely agree with the comment re: levels. Bringing your black levels up (and your mids too) will help immensely. The problem with a lot of digital B+W work is that the blacks are so flat and there is no grain or softness in them at all. I find that the more 'grey' you have the smoother it...

Do you have an offsite backup? You should!

How are you cloud-hosters managing the initial upload? 100 gigs of DNG's & TIFF's is a long slug, even on a fast 25/3 connection. I'm about to revamp my backup platform, but for photos, a RAID box + external drive (to backup the important parts of the array) does the trick.

How do you organise your digital library?

The metadata is in XMPP sidecars, which is an open format. The best thing is that I get all the benefits now, and if the doomsayers are right, then I go back to a year-date folder hierarchy, which is what Lightroom creates under the hood anyway.
