Do not shoot an Olympus E-M1II

It doesn't matter what camera you use - when you crop away 75% of the picture, sharpen till the edges are crispy and haloed, and push exposure to blown highlights, you have some practicing to do. Birds are all about detail and the shot needs to be real close SOOC. I'm not great at it but had...

    The Foveon Thread

I spent late yesterday an all of today shooting both X3F and DNG for comparison. 90% of what I'm doing is B&W and I can't tell the difference viewing them at 100%. At 200% I can see a difference but not enough to keep me from shooting DNG. My processing technique involves 3rd party software...

    Extension Tubes (the auto kind)

An auto extension tube is just that, it extends the distance of the lens from the focal plane while keeping all the electronic functions intact. There's no glass and nothing to interfere with the image, everything still works as it supposed to. I use them all the time and never had an issue on...

Big Brown dropped off a box from Adorama with my sd Quattro and 18-35 F1.8 today. I got 18 shots off before the battery went flat. Installed the Sigma software and opened a file. OMFG! Of all the cameras I've owned, loved and/or hated, this is the raw file I've been looking for! No, it's not...

    G7/G85....external flash question

The G85 popup flash will act as a commander for certain Panasonic units or third party dedicated flash units, I assume the G7 will too. If you purchased the Panasonic TTL model of the tt350, you should be good.

    Disabled Features Oly & Panasonic

It's Panasonic's method of autofocus. DFD stands for Depth From Defocus. The lens is cycled back and forth from out of focus areas to focused areas to determine if it is indeed in focus. There's a decent explanation here with regard to the GH5. Panasonic DFD Focusing Explained | Camera Jabber

Respectfully, you make a number of incorrect assumptions. I haven't shot Olympus in nearly a year, my gear is clearly listed in my signature. With that, you assume that I haven't used either version in the best possible circumstances, which I have with the G85. Also, in the text you quoted in...

    Panasonic 100-300 sharp images

I've been watching this forum since March and only recently began posting so I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but I have an opinion, and mind you, it's just an opinion. Wildlife and bird photography are the penultimate photographic disciplines. Birds in flight are the ultimate. Why...

    Panasonic 100-300 sharp images

Stabilization is an amazing thing and has come so far with the latest generation of cameras and lenses but, the equivalence of 600mm is still 600mm. With rare exception M43, and telephoto lenses still aren't the best combo and I keep hearing about how people cant get sharp pictures handheld with...

what photography related item did you buy this week?

I've always used extension tubes. It shortens the minimum focusing distance on telephoto and long zoom lenses. The best example was on the 50-200 SWD where I could get within a couple of feet of the backyard birds. The downside is you give up distances; you cant go from shooting a bird 6 feet...

    Share Birds

I don't claim to be a brilliant bird photographer but what I have learned is that it's a lot like fishing; you have to find a good spot where the light is decent and stop moving, wait for them to come to you. Don't suddenly jerk your camera to your eye when one gets close, go slow. Wear clothing...

First-day chasing birds with the G85 and was a cool, windy day at the lakes. The longest lens in the bag right now is the 35-100X but it sure proved its mettle. In the sea of American Coots waiting for the kids to throw some corn was this juvenile Snow Goose, its gray color brilliant against...

what photography related item did you buy this week?

When I say "higher" I mean not kit glass or the plastic fantastic's. A 300 F4 and a Tamron SP 90 Macro. And this is a move back to M43 after trading off my EM-1 and the fantastically sharp SWD lenses. It's entirely possible that I am a tool... At this point, I'm a hobbyist. I spent a number...

    Greetings From San Diego!

It's funny - a few months ago I sold off all my Olympus M43 gear and purchased a D500, which was surprisingly less expensive than the EM1 MKII.
