Panasonic G9 - Shooting Handball - indoor sports

I have shot a lot of basketball in indoor gyms, nearly all of which are poorly lit. I use an e-m1 mk 2 and panasonic 35-100 2.8. I would use shutter of about 1/640 to 1/800, aperture of course at 2.8, and auto-iso, where it would often times float to max of 6400. I would should high speed bursts...

I have used Kingston Canvas React Plus UHS II cards and been happy with them. I have not tested, but faster than the UHS I cards I was using before. Relatively inexpensive but I am not a professional.

DJI Mavic 3 joins the 4/3 club

Yes DJI is the majority owner of Hasselblad. Hasselblad was acquired by a VC firm in 2011. DJI acquired a minority stake in 2015, and then a majority stake in 2017. I would say DJI rescued Hasselblad. While the Hasselblad name is well regarded they didn't exactly have a successful business...

    FastRawViewer 2.0 released.

Excellent. I just bought in May and hadn't seen this. I am sure that I have a different workflow from most. I primarily use Apple Photos for DAM and syncing between devices. My use case for FastRawViewer - I shoot a lot of my indoor basketball for my teenage daughter and her teammates. I am...

Editing RAW image with external editor from Apple Photos (OSX 11.3 Bug Sur)

I use Mac OS Photos app with raw files. My experience with them has been that it can work with the raw file for some basic editing but doesn't hold up if you need to do a lot. To pull the original raw file out, go to File \ Export \ Export Unmodified Original. If you are shooting raw + jpg...

12-100 vs f/2.8 vs. primes for gym sports

I shoot a fair amount of indoor basketball for my daughter and her teammates. I use the Panasonic 35-100 2.8 and an E-M1.2. I am generally trying to get photo of a single player and even on the near court I am rarely all the way out to 35mm. I typically try to position myself on the baseline...

My First Year As a Pet Photographer

Nice work! I remember about 5 years our church was doing free family photos w/ the goal to put in a directory. We thought it would be fun to bring our Westie (like your last pic) in with us (which was expressly allowed). What I didn't consider was how the flash would affect him. The...

Which Olympus camera should I get?

I recently upgraded from the e-m5 ii (ungripped) to the e-m1 ii. My two thoughts the first time I held the camera in my hands were 1) the e-m1 ii is not near as big as I thought it would be, and 2) the grip on the e-m1 ii is magnificent. The camera just feels great in my hands and the ergonomics...

Apple M1 Macs and Photo / Video editing

I get your point, but I think the overall goal would be to run cool. If the MBA is running cool but doesn't have a fan, I would think it would be fine. iPads don't have a fan and believe their longevity is determined mainly by their battery and CPU speed. I would expect the same from the M1 MBA.

If you want a no-fuss solution, I would recommend eero - which can operate as a wireless mesh or can also use wired backhaul if your home has wired ethernet. Apple M1 Macs and Photo / Video editing

Saw this today regarding the $40 Pixelmator Pro app. The app has machine learning (ML) super resolution function. When run on the new M1 the ML bit does not run on the CPU or GPU, but on the M1's neural engine which is separate. Pixelmator says the ML Super Resolution runs 15x faster like this...

Apple M1 Macs and Photo / Video editing

A very reasonable question which I would think should be answered in the next couple of weeks as people get their hands on them. I have a 2012 iMac 27 inch at home that would love to replace with a rumored 24-inch iMac. Smaller on the desk would make my wife happy!

What did your 12-35 or 12-40 f2.8 replace in your bag?

For me the 12-40 replaced the panasonic 14 pancake, the Oly 45 and the Oly 12-50 zoom - all of which I sold. I held on to the Oly 25 1.8 but I really haven't used as much as I should since buying the 12-40.

Use a kit zoom and fix it at 16 or 25mm and then try to film some stuff to see which angle of view you prefer. I am not a video person, so I am sure others that are skilled in this area would jump in, but I imagine there is a lot more off-camera equipment you need to make good videos, like...

    E-M5iii vs E-M1ii

I just sold my E-M5 ii and bought an E-M1 ii. Aside from all of the feature differences that have been well covered, there were two things I noticed. 1) the E-M1ii was not as big as I thought it would be in my head. 2) My goodness does the standard grip on the E-M1 ii feel glorious.

    Lens recommendations for indoor sports

I use the 35-100 2.8 for indoor basketball. I'm typically shooting 1/640th and ISO 5000-6400. I use DXO prime noise reduction to help out a bit with the high ISO. Topaz Denoise I'm sure would be another option. Personally I don't mind the high ISO if it helps get the shot. Typical focal length...

what photography related item did you buy this week?

I found a used HLD-9 grip for E-M1 ii on Adorama for $45. The notes said something about the battery door not closing flush. Best Live Composite settings for star trails?

I think this applies when you are trying to get pinpoint stars, not when you are intentionally trying to get star trails. It's worth noticing differences in white balance. I think the colors are more accurate in your photo at 3800K, and maybe are a little more colorful in mine at 3300K. Worth...

Best Live Composite settings for star trails?

Sorry, I forgot to address this in my reply. I believe the way live comp works is you just set an exposure that you are happy with, and then subsequent exposures basically are just doing a pixel-by-pixel comparison. Each time a pixel is brighter than before, the composite will have the brightest...

Best Live Composite settings for star trails?

Here's a photo I took in a bright orange area on darksitefinder.com. If you can see stars with your naked eye, and let live comp run for an hour, you will have star trails that you can see. It doesn't take very many stars to fill the frame with trails. This was with E-M5 II and panasonic 14 2.5...

Basketball - Best of my Existing Lenses?

I have an E-M5 II and prefer S-AF to C-AF. (Although admittedly the first couple of shots in a burst are in better focus than the last). I also turn off face detection because that takes a little bit of processing time to figure out.

Basketball - Best of my Existing Lenses?

Yeah high ISO is just the way it has been for me, even in the best lit gyms. And the graininess of the high ISO gets worse when you crop in vs an uncropped image. Just do the best denoising you can on it in post, and do what you can. For a long time I kept my high ISO limit at 5000. Then bumped...

I photograph my kids youth basketball games sometimes. (Would do it more often but it is pretty much impossible to really watch the game and photograph it.) I used to use the 45mm 1.8. Now I have the 35-100 2.8 and use it, but man I miss the extra speed of the prime. I tend to shoot from the...

    Olympus vs JJC lens hoods

I used the JJC lens hood LH-J55C on the 12-50 and it worked great and reversed as well. There is also the squared lens hood LH-J55B that I considered but thought it was too short to do much and seemed like it would be a little bigger/bulkier when in the bag.

    Stupid me.

I had a friend forget ALL SD cards on a trip to Jamaica about 10 years ago. I think he wound up paying like $50 to some guy at a bar that had a Canon bag with him. Funny part it is there were some, um, discreet photos that were on the card, so he might could have made some of that money back!

    EPL6 - advantages of Panasonic 45-150 45-150MM, F4.0-5.6 vs Olympus 40-150R

I used that lens on a E-PM2 - a small camera w/o a viewfinder. It worked great outdoors, but inside, the shutter speed wasn't fast enough and I was disappointed with most shots. Of course, most of what I wanted to photograph indoors at that focal length were school events. And in those...

Did Panasonic just give the M43 market to Olympus?
