OMD- EM1 mkii Firmware 3.1 available

The updater will download the update to the PC first before writing it to the camera, so slow line shouldn't be a problem. Updates to camera and lenses are completely separate. The updater will tell you if there is any update available to your lens and then allow you to do that in a separate...

New firmware v2.2 out for E-M1 Mark II.

With my setup - I have the Fn lever set to mode 1, and the dial function for M set to 1: Shutter / FNo and 2: ISO / +/- (exp. comp). - I normally have the lever set to 1 and can change shutter and aperture with the wheels. If I need to adjust exposure comp I flip the lever to 2 and adjust the...

    E-M1mkii firmware 2.0

Strangely enough you have to update the updater from the Olympus Viewer (or the tethering app which I don't remember the name of at the moment). The Olympus updater doesn't seem to have any "self-updating" fuctionality. And it would of course be nice if Olympus had mentioned somewhere that you...

EM1 Mark II does well in weather resistance test

Working at the Pstereo festival last summer using both generations E-M1. The last day of the festival was steadily rainy - but no problems with either camera. Water on the front lens can create som nice effects though. A few more pictures from the day over here - 2017-08-19 Pstereo – Lørdag

E-M1 vs E-M1 mk II burst rates with Four Thirds lenses

@alex g - There of course was nothing personal, and I certainly appreciate the work behind it. But it has now been pinned there for nearly half a year and I think maybe everyone interested has had the chance to read it by now. My main contribution is through the use of my camera, it's just a...

E-M1 vs E-M1 mk II burst rates with Four Thirds lenses

Haha! This is getting ridiculous! If this is information is so important for you - why don't you just print it out and pin it to your wall? Or - even better - make a booklet of it to have it conveniently accessible in your camera bag? For the other 99.5% of us it is enough to know that the E-M1...

Em1 MK ii SD card door rattle?

There is a rubber ring sitting on the body, around the card slots. And this seals against the raised edge around the inner part of the door.

Not overly impressed with Olympus support

I have about 100000 frames shot with mechanical shutter, and none of them showing this problem - so I believe I have narrowed the problem down to the electronic shutter. I also have the mark II, which doesn't have this problem - so it certainly has to do with the camera I have used.

Not overly impressed with Olympus support

It's visible enough that the picture is unusable without serious cropping (apart from already being destroyed by the stripes from the fluorescent lights in this case). The bluish stripe is easier visible if you look at the version on my google drive, which is not compressed to death when...

Not overly impressed with Olympus support

The effect you get from fluorescent or LED lights is completely different. Here is an example where you see both. And shooting again with mechanical shutter is not an option when you shoot concerts. At this concert below, the sound level was minimal - that's why I had to use the electronic...

Not overly impressed with Olympus support

I noticed when I uploaded the photo to the post that it was really flattened, and the problem didn't show very clearly. That's why I also supplied the raw file. Olympus received the raw file, but still claims that this is normal.

Not overly impressed with Olympus support

When using the electronic shutter on my E-M1 there is a lighter, bluish, area along the top (or in this case - right) edge of the frame. This fault has been there always, but it's not until now I've had the chance to ship the camera in for fixing. The response from the European repair shop is...

Somebody has done the homework for you - Olympus E-M1 SD Card Speed Tests - Fastest memory card for EM1 - Camera Memory Speed Comparison & Performance tests for SD and CF cards Seems like the camera write speed is the limiting factor. E-M1 Mark II idiosyncrasies

You are absolutely right - it's not a problem for me, doing mainly stills. Just found it was an odd technical solution. And I can manage with the flippy screen (it didn't stop me from buying the camera). I had an external mic for my E-M5 which has terrible internal mics, but get by with the...

    E-M1 Mark II idiosyncrasies

Not sure where you get this agresivity from, but to answer the question - moving the connectors 1 cm around the corner to the front would probably have helped, or just swapped places with the hdmi and usb connectors to avoid blocking the movement of the screen. Or - my favourite solution -...

    E-M1 Mark II idiosyncrasies

Not particularly worried about the mic and headphone jacks myself. I was just surprised by the location. The only use for those two connectors is video work, and then they block the use of the flipout screen! The only advantage I can see with the articulating screen is if you do portraits of...

    E-M1 Mark II idiosyncrasies

If the reason for ditching the tiltable screen of the mark I in favour of the flimsy screen on the mark II was that it was better for video - why on earth did they locate the mic and headphone connectors in the only spot where they block the flipping out use of the flimsy screen? They are not...

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

As barry13 explained above. With the E-M1 you can either Format, or Erase all. Neither of those will clear the actual data blocks from the card. The difference I observed is that after Format it will start writing new data blocks from the top every time. After an Erase it will continue writing...

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

You are probably right. I do about 100 sessions per card per year. So if the life expectancy of a card is 100000 cycles, it would last me about 1000 years. My main discovery was that the old - deleted - pictures will be available for a longer time if I erase the files rather than format the...
  43. ThorEgil

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

Yes, that confirms more or less what I said above. Photorec reads the card, block by block, and restores what is (physically) there. The whole point with my original post is that if you format the card it looks like the wear levelling index is also cleared, so it will start writing from the top...
  44. ThorEgil

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

If that was the case you would still find the old pictures there with the recovery software. It scans the physical locations of the card, bypassing the logical index. But you don't - the location is written over with new data.

Forgot to mention that. It's SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I 32GB.
  46. ThorEgil

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

This may be the theory, but as I have explained - twice - this is not what I see. If I format the card between each shooting session it will start from the top, writing over the latest pictures. The end of the card is never touched unless you fill it completely. Go try it yourself. The data...
  47. ThorEgil

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

I also expected this - thus my surprise when I discovered that it was not the case. But my experience is purely empiric - what I see is what I see. When I formatted the card it started writing from the top - overwriting the latest pictures. When I erase the card rather than format it, it will...

Optimising longevity of the SD cards - an observation

(Background info: Flash memory, like SD cards and SSDrives, is exposed to wear and tear every time data is written to the medium. To optimise the life expectancy of the medium they have an index of which areas are written to latest, and the software drivers use this to spread the wear by...
