Minor firmware updates for OM-1 II, OM-1, and OM-5

Pen and Tell just posted a more detailed report. It looks like v1.6 is a much larger update than OM is letting on. https://pen-and-tell.de/en/2024/04/om-1-der-neue-af/

Minor firmware updates for OM-1 II, OM-1, and OM-5

Other than the Language and Date/Time reset, the firmware update also reset my Custom Mode Aperture/Shutter speeds back to default. Otherwise, all other settings were restored.

Minor firmware updates for OM-1 II, OM-1, and OM-5

I forgot to check my battery (it was below 50%). The phone app downloaded the firmware but wouldn’t do the firmware update, providing a warning that the battery was low. Switching to a full battery and restarting wifi, the app recognized where I left off and continued with the update.

I have a whole new respect for Bird Photographers

Some great information there. For myself I have found lighting to have the greatest impact on my bird results. Early morning or late afternoon/evening with the sun behind me provides much nicer results with less chances of shadows and blown highlights.

    OM System Interview

OM System has mentioned in the past that they would commit to at least 1 new body and 2 new lenses each year. So, technically they already announced one body and two new lenses already. But I am struggling to find that for last year as we only had the 90mm Macro released and other than that...

    OM System Interview

These comments suggest the PEN line is not done and could be expanded. "our definition of outdoor use extends beyond just the adventurous; it encompasses outdoor activities in everyday life as well. Our system is ideal for individuals who enjoy capturing snapshots, macro shots while traveling...

    OM-1 Mark II

Some additional details from this link Please note the following: It will not include new features introduced with the OM-1 Mark II, such as Live GND and AI Detection AF for humans. It will provide some AF performance improvements only and therefore the new AF performance of the OM-1 will not...

    OM-1 Mark II

If we go by the E-M1X announcement and the follow up major firmware 3.0 update to the E-M1ii that included some of the AF-C enhancements from the E-M1X, then we could expect a firmware update this summer for the original OM-1. The E-M1X was announced 1/24/2019 and then shipped in March. E-M1ii...

    OM-1 Mark II

We know that the OM1ii received double the buffer memory as that accounts the large increase in photos captured before buffer is full. But it looks like there was also memory added to help with processor related tasks as this 2nd type of memory is likely what could limit a firmware update to...

Is OM Systems finally moving on those long-rumored telezooms?

The problem is that the zoom range shown doesn’t mean anything now. All we know is that they may come out with another telephoto zoom. So we can guess anything now

Big News Coming from OMSystems 30/01/24 ?

The latest rumor update mentions weight of 2.065kg. This was within range of expectation for any mount, since this is a very long telephoto lens.

“Very high end” OMD camera rumoured for 2024

The OM-5 also has the weather sealing that the E-M10 doesn’t support, which OMDS considers part of the wildlife genre they want to focus on. But this does highlight the need for OMDS to introduce cheaper/slower prime/zooms with weather sealing. I still think there is an opportunity to...

“Very high end” OMD camera rumoured for 2024

The problem with this analogy is that the OM-1 is a top end body with stacked sensor, while the other cameras mentioned don’t have a stacked sensor. The closest comparison would be the Fuji X-H2S that also has a stacked sensor and listed for $300 more than the OM-1. The stacked sensor from the...

“Very high end” OMD camera rumoured for 2024

OM Digital doesn’t have the resources to support another new sensor, so I think they will try to final another application for the 20mp stacked sensor from the OM-1. This will allow them to provide firmware updates across multiple bodies with little extra effort. I doubt they will do a video...

“Very high end” OMD camera rumoured for 2024

A Global Shutter sensor would not benefit shooting Wildlife that much. The Global Shutter's biggest benefit would be for indoor Sports where indoor lighting and flash become more of an issue. OMDS won't be going after the indoor Sports market.

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

The G9ii will have a very limited range where it's HHHR provides better noise results as the increased DR over the OM-1 is only available below ISO200 https://photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Olympus%20System%20OM-1,Panasonic%20Lumix%20DC-G9M2
  28. H

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

It looks like sensor readout speed is 1/50s when DR boost is on. When the DR boost is off (ie SH mode) it looks to be around 1/75s. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/67403177
  29. H

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

Correct. This also applies to single shot and low H modes. The SH modes are the one exception as they will not have the better DR regardless of the shutter speed.
  30. H

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

Someone just posted a detailed comparison with different shutter speeds. It looks HHHR does take advantage of the additional DR if you stay below 1s. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/67402814

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

I wonder if the sensor readout speed is also different.

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

The results at Photonstophotos has been post for the G9ii. The additional DR is only at base ISO with the mechanical shutter. The electronic shutter results are comparable to the GH6 DR.

G9ii raw IQ at base ISO

I believe this is the pre-shot high FPS mode. Also, Panasonic did mention this in the footnote of their press release and may have not been understood at the time what it actually meant. The limited Dynamic Range also occurs when shooting slower than 1/15s. This last limitation could have a...

    G9 mkii Coming?

I just happened across his YouTube channel a week ago as he has reviewed the OM1. He generally shoots Canon and I like his style for reviewing. He plans to compare the GH9ii with his OM-1 in a future video.

    G9 mkii Coming?

At the 1:32 mark of this video you can see that the focus ring still grabs when he tried to turn it. I guess this will still be an issue for some.

    G9 mkii Coming?

These photos came from the Panasonic China web site that accidentally posted early and then was removed. Here is the google cache for that page. https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Nj9az4dx-9sJ:https://consumer.panasonic.cn/list_1266/DC-G9M2.html&cd=11&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

    G9 mkii Coming?

An updated 100-400 that supports TCs makes sense. But since the TCs were discontinued, I wonder if Panasonic had to redesign the TCs in order to work with the new 100-400. That would suggest new TCs are also coming.

    PL 100-400mm Discontinued

    PL 100-400mm Discontinued

Is OM Systems finally moving on those long-rumored telezooms?

On the Tele end I would like to see OMDS do a higher quality 300mm zoom. It doesn't need to be fast but needs to be well under 1kg and cost around $1k. There is a large gap in weight and price between the existing 75-300 and the longer/faster tele options. I think there is a missed...

    PL 100-400mm Discontinued

The 200mm f2.8 and PL 100-400 focused as quickly with the OM-1 than with any other OM Pro lens. They didn't need to update the AF for these lenses.

    PL 100-400mm Discontinued

After seeing the 200mm f2.8 and both TCs getting discontinued, I guess this should not be a big surprise. It looks like Panasonic is leaving the Telephoto end to OM for m43. https://www.43rumors.com/bad-news-leica-dg-100-400mm-marked-as-discontinued-in-japanese-stores/
