High ISO on EM1 MK II ...what noise?

I've actually seen that thread. I can't say ive read every post, but very interesting and informative thread.

High ISO on EM1 MK II ...what noise?

Just received camera on Friday, was gone all day yesterday. Today was first day to really test camera out. (basic functions, does it turn on and off, and strange noises..etc.) So it was set to default NR, shooting jpg, aperture priority, auto ISO..which topped out at 6400. So just out of box...

High ISO on EM1 MK II ...what noise?

Again, I just got the camera on Friday. Did not have time to do much with it Friday or Saturday. Just basic testing today. (does camera turn on and off, does it AF, any strange noises...etc. It's a new camera. I didn't set NR to anything, so whatever default setting was. I was shooting...

High ISO on EM1 MK II ...what noise?

I have shot raw for years. Just testing camera with jpg. I found it interesting with default NR setting, the files look very clean. No waxy looks. This is with new V 3 FW update. For 95% of time I prefer shooting raw. But ilike the NR in camera.

High ISO on EM1 MK II ...what noise?

Just got my camera on Friday, still trying to learn functions, set it up, doing test shots..etc. So I did a few shots (jpg) at 6400...remarkably clean. 1600-3200...no issues there. Is this the NR built into camera? I dont see any waxy effects like I did on the fuji x100 series in particular at...

    Cameras are just tools...but...

Right tools for the job. Yes choice of tools are just personal preferences. Life is short. Might as well use the tools we are happy using. What camera feels best in our hands. I've tried different brands through the years. None of them ever made a great photo or a bad one. Yet, just...

    Cameras are just tools...but...

It's very subjective, we all just enjoy using certain brands, models over others. Nothing wrong with that at all. I just wish I had stayed with OM, but now I'm more confident of what I like, and enjoy using.

    Cameras are just tools...but...

All i can speak to is my own experience. Ive shot with Nikon FF, and Fuji. I supposed if i pixel peeped enough, or went to 6400 and up the differences would be greater. Yet, looking at pics from a few years back with original EM1, i have night shots of downtown Memphis that look quite good. Im...

I have not yet. I literally just recieved camera today. Charged battery, took some test shots. I posted here, then have been working on putting shelf together for my wife. Definitely plan to update FW.

    Cameras are just tools...but...

I just didn't enjoy the experience of using other brands. Happy with OM D EM1 and EM5, and a few lenses....but I paid too much attention to posts about sensors and so forth. The touted superior IQ of Fuji. Not Fuji bashing, it's a fantastic system. But I enjoyed the OM system. Looking back...

Training videos, books, Youtube channels, etc.

I recently discovered this guy. Joe Edelman His videos aren't very long, but he is very informative. I thought I was something of a portrait photographer, but there is SO much I don't know. I'm enjoying these videos. Joe is also an Olympus user, but primarily, he seems to know about lighting...

I am back to Olympus for good

I particulary agree with this post. "Sometimes You just like what you like." I had OM D EM1...and EM5..and a few lenses and I was more than happy. But I started reading too much, this sensor is better cause it's bigger etc. So..I sold it, and went Fuji. Now Fuji is a great camera (xt-1, x100t)...

    Anybody buy-sell-repurchase O-MD?

I bought an EM1…then returned it, bought Canon 6D…but just missed EM1, so returned 6D and bought another EM1…then with the rebates..(back in Dec) bought an EM5..and several lenses. I've been content since. There are times I miss a dslr, but I would not dump OM for a dslr. I might add a dslr...

    Raw or jpeg?

Beautifully stated! That is one of the most profound statements, and best definition I've ever read of a photograph. I do think….photographers are artists, and rather than a paint brush, use a different tool, but a photograph is their interpretation of a subject. I know arguments can be...

    Raw or jpeg?

All photos are processed, either the camera does most of if (jpeg) or you do it (raw). I just go with what works for me and right now I like the portrait settings, although I still do some editing, cropping, adjusting exposure sometimes WB, but its miminal

    Raw or jpeg?

I did not in any way, mean to imply that jpegs were superior to raw or vice versa. I have shot raw for many years, and I like the flexibility. I was only saying that I liked the looks I was getting out of OM E1 on portrait setting in jpegs. I was curious as to which m 4/3rds shooters...

    Raw or jpeg?

Thank you. I'm still learning the EM1…it's a capable camera. More so than the photographer. :) raw does give me more to work with, but tried portrait setting for first time yesterday. I'm inclined to stick with it.

    Raw or jpeg?

I shot raw a lot with dslrs, but with the EM 1, I really like what I'm getting from jpegs..in portrait setting. This was a shot from yesterday, with only slight increase in exposure in post. Other than that sooc. Didn't adjust WB or skin tones. Maybe I'm relying too much on auto, but if...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

That's the part that bothers me, people who have never used the system, dismissing it as a toy, or strictly amateur point and shoot system. If someone tests out the system, and doesn't like it, that's one thing. But don't knock it till you've tried it. I have read several blogs...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

Technically…they are professional photographers. If they are doing a job, which is pays their living expense, then they are professional. In my mind, professional does not mean..better, or mastery of the craft. Only that they are making a living taking photographs. However, I have seen...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

Not all amateurs, but certainly there are a lot of forum posters..who spend days..arguing over the merits of which camera has a better sensor, or which brick wall looks sharpest with a particular lens, when enlarged 300%, at ISO 10,000. Then there are those, who actually go out and take...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

There is no question my Canon 6D..outperformed M 4/3rds….when it came to low noise, high ISO. The 6D could easily handle 8000 ISO with low noise. My EM1…is so much fun to shoot with, and I take it with me more. In my world, the camera I take with me, outperforms a camera sitting at home in my...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

I personally think..at this point, MFT gear is a nice addition to a FF kit. Who says..one has to dump their FF gear to appreciate MFT? Why not use both? Of course, that was the way I started…but in the end, I sold off all my Canon FF gear. Not saying that's right for everyone, but it's right...

    E-M5 to E-M1, or...

I have both. I like the control layout, size of buttons better on the EM1 I cannot bring myself to sell the EM5, and will use it..till it just wears out. As others have said, there isn't any noticeable jump in IQ on the EM1. At least not that I can see. Which is not a bad thing, it just...

Which lens is best for portraits?

I agree with Frank here, this is a fine casual portrait. I personally prefer portraits that show a bit of personality and don't look so posed, but more natural..relaxed. Not to say posed portraits can't be outstanding, they certainly can, as evidenced by the postings here.

And yet another outstanding set. I posted my previous comments, before you posted the last set of the Irina. An outstanding set, but for some reason..my favorite is #3..followed closely by 7 & 9, if I counted right. All are outstanding, those are just my favorites. Love the colors, the poses...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

I'd believe that. I remember owning manual focus film cameras, when AF came out. Canon's new AF lenses…didn't fit the manual focus bodies. So..in time, I bought AF. Later on, I bought digital. I went all the way with m 4/3…I have no FF equipment. Did I make a mistake? If I did..so what? I...

 Truer words never spoken! I have made some embarrassingly bad photos..with expensive equipment in the past with expensive equipment (Hasselbad film) and some good photos with cheap equipment ( Pentax K1000 and 50 mm lens, I bought used for $50.00 ) The photographer creates the...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

My Canon (FF) gear was better in overall quality, but I enjoy shooting with m 4/3 more, and not being a working pro, this works for me. BTW, the bias on other sites, is not referring to Nikon Cafe. Some very nice people there, and even when I was firmly in Canon, most I interacted with couldn't...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I have photographer friends..who seem to think my choice of gear is not as good as their gear. FF. Reminds me of the old Nikon vs Canon arguments. I have never heard of artists arguing over which brand or size paint brush to use. I just don't...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

I don't go about suggesting m4/3's superiority to FF…, but it seems to bother some people. I just don't understand why. I suspect Jay86 is right..(people just love to hate). I have used..med format..(film) as well as 35 mm format and later dslrs, and I'm happy with the m 4/3 system..it works...

Why all the anti M 4/3 bias?

Not here of course, but other boards. It's fine if people don't like m 4/3, or it doesn't meet their needs, but why take the time to trash the format? A lot of people, enjoy the format. I don't use FF anymore, but I don't post threads trashing FF dslrs. No one is trying to force me to use...

Thinking about going fully with m43 and seling off my Nikon Gear

You are correct, the second photo is FF, but it's not SOOC…there was some processing..using some of NIK's BW conversion software…but..probably the FF..did give it better transition in tones. Don't write off m4/3 sensor for portraits, just based on my work. There are many, much better examples...

Thinking about going fully with m43 and seling off my Nikon Gear

Well said. I sold my most of my Canon stuff, then bought more…and then returned it, and sold the rest. For many of the same reasons you listed.. I enjoy shooting to OLY more….don't need super large files…I like having the equivalent of very long lenses. (I have a Panny 100-300). I'm not...

Thinking about going fully with m43 and seling off my Nikon Gear

It depends…. I planned to sell off part of my Canon DSLR gear, which included several L lenses, and just keep a body, with a couple of lenses, flash to use in addition to my M4/3 gear. In the end, I got rid of all the Canon. Can M4/3…compare with FF Canon? Again, it depends. The FF definitely...

    Question: Size/Weight/Convenience vs "ultimate" IQ

I have both 17 and 12-40 f/2.8 and I don't see that the 12-40 is that much better in IQ..at the 17mm FL. Very close…but it's not demonstrably better, IMO. Unless you need the convenience of a zoom, primes..are most always going to be sharper, lighter, faster. Mostly because there is more...
