Panasonic and Sony Factories Damaged in Quake

There was a magnitude 6.2 in Nagano Prefecture on Friday evening, which did some damage.

Now Sigma are going to make lenses for m4/3

This would be a coup if they did this. At the moment, I use some Nikon lenses(both MF & AF) on :43: (I have an adapter that provides aperture control on AF-S lenses)

    GH1, GF1 and G1 firmware hackable

It's up to you. The GF1 standard maximum settings are: 1280 x 720p, 25/30 fps (output as 50p or 60p PAL/NTSC) 17Mbps If you want better video of high speed action, then using the hack, you could get rid of video "mud", by raising the bit rate to maybe 25 - 30 Mb/s. You need not use 1080p...

    GH1, GF1 and G1 firmware hackable

The hack allows 24p 1080 which is the accepted cinematic frame rate. Also, the bit rate of 13Mb/s shows video "mud" when there is fast moving motion. Frame rates of higher than around 30Mb/s drastically reduce this "mud", allowing amateur film makers to produce good quality movies.

    GH1, GF1 and G1 firmware hackable

Later GH1 hardware was NOT modified to prevent the hack. The hack written by the hacker was contained in a software tool. (He was very careful not to circulate hacked firmware, most of which is copyrighted.) The software tool takes existing Panasonic firmware(any firmware up to and including...

Nikon 4/3 m4/3 coming in April

I disagree with this. Sensors have not gotten bigger and bigger. There is probably the same proportion of FF sensor DSLRs to APS-C DSLRs as there was 5 years ago. Yes, micro 4.3 is in the "big sensor neighborhood".... it not that much smaller than APS-C. I agree with this.... micro 4/3...

    Rokkor Lens recommendations?

I have the MC Rokkor 58mm F1.4, MC Rokkor 50mm F1.4, MD Rokkor 50mm F1.4, and the MC Rokkor 58mm F1.4 is the best of them wide open. It has almost no CA, and it's sharp in the middle and still fairly sharp in the corners. At F4 it's very sharp. I also have the MD 85mm F2, and it is ultra sharp!!

    Sigma 4/3 to Panasonic GF1

However, I have a Panasonic G2, and a Sigma 55-200mm lens, and with the Panasonic DMW-MA1 mount adaptor, it DOES AF, but it hunts before locking. But I think it does prove the difference between the first generation (G1, GH1, GF1) and the second generation (G2, GH2, G10 & GF2).

The best thing about the GF2?

I've had a play with a GF2 in the last few days. In spite of no dial, it seems to be quite easy and intuitive to use. And it SMALL, particularly with the 14mm pancake!!!!! One useful thing is that you can use the touch screen to designate a focus point that the camera will follow around...

Pro's and Cons of an adapted Lens

I don't see the problem.... You can get adapter very cheaply these days, and I have numerous. It just means that you don't have to restrict yourself to any one brand/mount.

Does there exist a reasonably priced 12 or 13mm MF lens?

You already have one!!!! The 14-45mm lens has the distortion auto corrected in the camera (G1, GF1, GH1, etc). If you shoot RAW, it is ALSO auto corrected by Silkypix. HOWEVER, if you use a 3rd party RAW converter (not Photoshop), then you will get an uncorrected image. The corrected...

Image quality loss inherent with all adapted lenses?

The test doesn't tell much about how "all the light bouncing around in the adapter and chamber" affects the edge sharpness, because they haven't done a test on FILM to use as a CONTROL reference for a micro 4/3 camera image. There a five different Olympus 50mm F1.8 lenses, and this one...

Panasonic GF2 First Impressions at The Luminous Landscape

I handled some GF2 mock ups today in Tokyo. (usually, they will have 3-4 cameras, plus a few empty shell bodies, when a new model is released) It was interesting to see the size, which is a bit more like a Panasonic LX-5 in size, than a GF1. I'll be interested to handle the real thing in a...

    How to select adaptable lenses

Some of the decisions regarding the selection and buying of lenses has to do with price. If they are expensive, then you have to do ALL of your homework. If they are mid priced, then you either have to "know your stuff", or carry a risk. If they are cheap, then you have little to lose if you...

confusion over focal length of lenses

You might say that 20 years ago, you had 35mm film and large format(and say 110). I guess more than 99% of people used 35mm. These days with digital(interchangeable lenses), we have large format, FF (=35mm), APS-C and 4/3. (and a couple of other odds and ends) I guess maybe 85-90% use...

    mu-4/3s for fast action/sports

At 40 frames per second, you wouldn't even be able to see liveview!!!!! In order to see liveview @ 40fps, you would see each liveview frame for less than 0.025 sec. Or to put another way, in order to sample and show the liveview, the sensor would need to open the shutter and not take a shot to...

    mu-4/3s for fast action/sports

No, not exactly in practice. This implies you cannot follow a subject. Yes, you lose the liveview between shots, but it shows the last shot you took. I tried this with the GH2 in the 40fps mode, and once you get used to it, you can follow a subject by using the previous shot on the...

Is GH1 with firmware 1.3 hackable?

There is Ver 1.32, which is hackable, but 1.34 which is not. May 2010 is Ver 1.32, while July 2010 and later is 1.34 June has both Ver 1.32 & 1.34, so you can't tell by date. So your GH1 has a serial number like xx0Gxxxxxx ? (August 2010) Your's is NOT hackable.

But that was the whole concept with :43: !!!! Smaller cameras. :43: is supposed to offer a path to smaller cameras with larger sensors, with an additional bonus of interchangeable lenses. The GF2 provides "coat pocket" carrying better than the GF1, which a DSLR can never do!! "The Gf1 is...

    GF2 has been announced

The price for the GF1 in Japan is actually quite cheap. Anyone who is posting in this forum already HAS a Panasonic :43: camera, so it's hardly surprising that if you have a GF1 or a GH1, then a GF2 holds little attraction for you. However, I agree that it's a good product for Panasonic...

    The Panasonic 3D lens

The lens throws two images onto the sensor, but because the Panasonic GH2 or G2 knows that it's a 3D lens (I tried it out the other day on the GH2, and the LCD says "3D"), it combines the shot and saves it as a 3D format image. I will have another look today, and take some sample images.

GH2 to ship in US next week?

GH2 to ship in US next week?

I'll have a better look tomorrow, and take an SD card with me to save a few shots. The touch screen seems to be the same as the G2, but the focus seems to be quicker. The 3D lens is interesting. It seems to be fixed focus, so there's no AF beep.

    Ordered a GH2 today...

I tried a GH2 in a shop here in Japan. Seems nice, and the AF was very quick!!!! The 3D lens is intriguing.... no AF from what I can tell, and no focus beep or focus lock. The camera recognises it as a 3D lens though.

    Purchasing GF1 gear in Japan/Taiwan?

You need to know where to look in Japan for new gear. The large store are never the cheapest, except when there is a special run out discount.(often on a long weekend) e.g. E-PL1 with 14-42mm & 40-150mm - $750 AUD E-PL1 with 14-42mm - $570 AUD The older legacy lenses can be cheap, but...

But these taxes are NOT hidden sales taxes!!! For example, there is income tax, then there is local/regional income tax, then unemploment insurance & pension must also be taken out. Purchasing GF1 gear in Japan/Taiwan?

This is not correct. The GST/VAT in Japan is only 5%. Japan is not as expensive as some people believe, but you have to know how and where to buy. It's true that many Japanese made cameras are cheaper in the USA, but this is not the case for the Panasonic G series cameras. For example, a...

Is Now the Time to Buy Adapted Lenses?

As a counter point to what you're saying here, generally, that would be correct if the demand for lenses was equal. I live in Japan, and I have access to very cheap second hand Japanese lenses. GH2 focus speed demo

One of the key criticisms of :43: by :43: haters has been Contrast Detecton AF. They often conveniently hold up the lackluster AF preformance of Olympus CDAF and lump Panasonic CDAF into the same category. I did some tests quite a while ago, and came to the conclusion that the Panasonic CDAF...

How to downgrade firmware from v1.5 to v1.4 Lumix G1?

There is another solution. You can load the G13 hack, which is also available for the G1 (I have done this myself). You can load it, and set the firmware version to 0.0 !!!!!! Along with that, you can also set it to use 3rd party batteries. Then if you don't wish to have the hack, you...
