    Farewell folks :-(

Good points, Gary, I can see what you are saying now, and you might be right. Still I wouldn't hesitate getting a Sony DSLR...there are no assurances about the future with any company. SLRs may die off like rangefinders (mostly) did...replaced with...who knows? Sony has a long history with...

    Farewell folks :-(

That wasn't how I read that article at all, Gary. What I read is that they are looking at pushing the envelope with the DSLR form by integrating new technologies. The pellicle camera was just the first example of this, the interviewee said. They are working on a killer A700 replacement (no...

dust on sensor, hot pixels or what? (E-P1)

Okay, so this is some kind of noise or other sensor issue. It can't be dust. Dust shows up dark, this is clearly lighter. It's in pretty much the exact same place, but only at higher ISOs...it shows up in images at 400 and above. I shot some images with the lens cap on last night and they were...

dust on sensor, hot pixels or what? (E-P1)

I went through my files on LR, zoomed in all the way. The USO (unidentified spotted objects) are in many but not all of the images. When they are present, however, they are always lighter and always in the same spot.

dust on sensor, hot pixels or what? (E-P1)

Dhazeghi's dust test indicates some dust. I guess I should clean the sensor. If it's noise, that's quite disturbing. I guess I could use the healing brush in LR to get rid of them, but one of the big bonuses of digital for me when I switched from film was no long hours doing dust and spot...

dust on sensor, hot pixels or what? (E-P1)

I was probably at 1600. But would noise look so much like...dust? I'm used to chroma and luminance noise but this is very specific spots and the same spots from image to image, as well. I tried pixel mapping. Still there. Anyone else positively ID this as dust on the sensor? thanks so much...

dust on sensor, hot pixels or what? (E-P1)

I was processing some images from a restaurant shoot I did with an E-P1 and I found myself, "Gosh, that image looks like I shot it on film." A little more staring at it and I realized why...there was dust on it! Little white spots to be exact, flurries if it were snow. It was actually on all...

Pimped E-p1 (grip replaced with cork)

Kal, I don't have images of my process, but you can figure it out from this set on flickr: Removing hand grip on Olympus E-P1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! You might be able to recover the grip and screw it back on. I'm not sure the plastic frame that goes around the grip will still fit, and I'm...

    Taste of the Southwest

Nice work! I missed Horseshoe Bend on my trip through there two summers ago. Next time you are in the area, head north from Monument Valley to Valley of the Gods. It's less visited and it's BLM land. The buttes (is that the right word?) are smaller but really dramatic and you can get up close...

Why did you choose Olympus over Panasonic?

I bought an E-P1 because it had in-body IS (over the GF-1) and I like Oly's jpeg engine. I matched it with Panny's 20mm and I'm thrilled. I also like Oly's reverence for its own past; I've used many Oly cameras over the years, 35SP, 35LE, Pen F, Pen D2, and they are all cracking good cameras...

Pimped E-p1 (grip replaced with cork)

Yes, it would. I think mine was out of warranty anyway. I'm not sure how you could make a bigger grip, but if you were a woodworker I'm sure there would be a way to carve a new grip out of wood. There are three screws--you have to get at them from under the front plate--that hold that plastic...

Vietnam and Korea: E-P1, Panny 20 and Square

I tried to post a few teasers but they were probably too big. I just rescaled them. I had a blast with the square format. Just like with the on-board black and white function, the 1:1 (or 6:6 as I think Oly calls it) allows you to "see" in a different way. I would love an articulated screen for...

Pimped E-p1 (grip replaced with cork)

Just thought I'd show this off. The cork gives the E-P1 a nice, non-plasticky feel. It wasn't hard to do, but I did have to take off the bottom and back plates. A lot easier than taking apart an old rangefinder camera!

Vietnam and Korea: E-P1, Panny 20 and Square

This fall, I travelled to Seoul, Korea and then Saigon and Hanoi in Vietnam to visit students studying abroad. I took along only my E-p1, and set it for square format. I mostly used a Panny 20, which is as glued to my brain as it is to my E-P1. I also had a 12-60 four thirds lens which I used...
