Opening Olympus ORF (RAW) files in Windows

For less than $15 dollars, I simply uninstalled the Olympus codec and now use only Lightroom and Photoshop. I no longer see a reason to browse the files through Windows Explorer. I guess that's the way they want it. I also sold the Olympus.

    Exposure/Histogram puzzle with GF1

Everything is on manual. The histogram is not just slightly off. What I am saying is that changing exposure settings has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT on the live histogram. It doesn't move a single iota.

    Exposure/Histogram puzzle with GF1

This is while taking a picture. We're not talking about an "inaccuracy". We're talking 100% wrong. The screen COMPLETELY compensates for any adjustments you dial in, so whatever you dial in looks like a perfect exposure on the live histogram. Try it, and let me know if I'm fibbing. With...

    Exposure/Histogram puzzle with GF1

No matter what ISO/shutter/f-stop combination I choose in fully manual mode, the GF1 histogram shows me a perfect exposure. It looks like the histogram shows what's going on the screen, rather than the picture to be taken, and the screen adjusts to light conditions making the histogram USELESS...

    GF1 Autofocus with 20mm/1.7 puzzle

Any clue why the 20mm/1.7 focuses so slowly in video mode? I've pretty much given on this camera for photography due to the difficult interface, but it's my only video camera until I find something better so would appreciate your input.

    GF1 Autofocus with 20mm/1.7 puzzle

When I first got the GF1 and 20mm, I recall that AF while shooting video was fast and noisy (which was fine with me). Now, AF takes forever though it's a lot quieter. It's become so slow as to be useless. Did I change some setting, or am I just not remembering correctly how it was when I...

Thank you for the input; I will come back soon to the forum with some questions and observations about the GF1 handling.

Best way to import AVCHD video from Pany

Why does it change the extension from .mts to .m2ts? Adobe Bridge has difficulties with .m2ts, so I prefer mts.

    Pany 20mm lens hood

Tips for making the best out of GF1?

Rooz, As Admin said, let's keep it cool. Everyone here is very knowledgable so let's just try to learn from one another. I've been shooting Nikon digitals since they came out, and I probably will again. I'm just now learning the GF1, and I was surprised at how the GF1 Auto ISO behaved...

Panasonic 7-14mm for the G1... is it worth the cash?

I'm not buying lenses until they come out with more fixed focals. 7mm or 8mm f2.8 I'd buy in a heart-beat, and it wouldn't be gigantic or cost as much.

    Is Panasonic software useful

I am using Premiere Pro CS5. So far, I just copy the whole file structure of AVCHD from the card because I don't know what all of those files are for. It works, but it's rather cumbersome. PhotoFUNstudio I noticed only pulls only the mts file from the card plus it adds its own file. That...

Tips for making the best out of GF1?

I think I understand Rooz' conundrum. You can't choose M mode and auto ISO, which is a setting I often chose on my other camera. P with program shift could be a decent substitute.

Tips for making the best out of GF1?

I just side-graded from EPL1 to GF1; so far I think it was a good move for me (partly because of the 20mm lens), but I'm kind of stumped by the long manual. What are some of the top suggestions for settings that you have? Has anyone experienced the GF1 overexposing when a person takes up a...

    Is Panasonic software useful

Thanks Bill. Agree with you on Lightroom. I was wondering whether there was anything special about the Pany software. For example, Olympus software has the ability to covert RAW files to emulate in-camera JPGs pretty much pefectly.

Best way to import AVCHD video from Pany

Specifically, I have the GF1. I just copied the AVCHD directories to the hard drive, and that seemed to work fine for Windows Media Player and other programs, but not for the PHOTOfunSTUDIO which came with the camera. It won't recognize the files. So what, right? Or is there a reason to use...

    GF1 body for $300.

The GF1 with 20mm is listed as discontinued at B&H (moments after I ordered mine), and the 20mm is $315, so if you want the GF1 + 20mm you might have to get it piecemeal.

Thom Hogan Opines on the Native Lenses

Many people won't ever get to use the 17/2.8 because of its obvious problem on paper: that "2.8" designation. Hard to understand the marketing rationale that went into the decision to make that your one and only prime lens.

    Dx0 "disaster" for the GH2

One possible explanation for this is that the GH1 simply did not live up to its potential. In other words, Panasonic could have used the GH1 sensor to produce pictures that are equal to or better in some respects than the GH2. I am not saying that is true, but it would explain Reichmann's...

    The Flash/EVF Dichotomy

If it's a macro of a stationary object you can use the time-delay exposure release. Or use the LCD. With magnification, focusing is very accurate.

Panasonic GH2 review by Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape

I probably pushed that argument too far, as everyone has something else in mind when they say small and portable. The other day, I showed my new E-PL1 to a relative who is in the market for a camera. She thought that the E-PL1 with the 14-42 collapsible was too big and too heavy. You can't...

  47. R

Panasonic GH2 review by Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape

I tend to agree that mirrorless is convincing. The GH1 showed that. The Sony NEX showed that you can have a bigger sensor in a tiny mirrorless package. Maybe Nikon and Canon will follow suite and provide adapters for their legacy glass. Can't hurt to be an optimist.

  49. R

Panasonic GH2 review by Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape

One reason it makes sense to lump them together is that they're part of the same system. Once you invest in a Nikon or Canon system, you can move from FF to DX and vice versa and keep your flashes and as long as you mostly buy FF lenses, keep your lenses too. So even though I've never owned a...
