    Micro 4/3 Holy Trinity

I mostly choose one of the following combinations: 9-18mm, 45mm (rarely these days) 14mm, 20mm (with the Panasonic GM1) 20mm, 45mm (with the Olympus E-M5) where 45mm is the Olympus lens. I chose 9-18mm and 14-150mm some years ago, but I have chosen this combination rarely for a long time...

    Panasonic 12-60/3.5-5.6 vs. Olympus M.Zuiko 12-50/3.5-6.3

I owned two Olympus 12-50mm lenses. Both are quite usable from the short end to the middle, but at the long end both were really awful. Of course, one can take good pictures with this lens nevertheless, but I would not buy it again. The Panasonic version is said to be better, but I have never...

Is there a better general purpose lens than the panasonic 20mm f1.7?

We all make mistakes and through them we, hopefully, learn and improve ourselves. One of the typical mistakes many of us make, myself included, is to take hypes at face value. You are not alone.

Is there a better general purpose lens than the panasonic 20mm f1.7?

Just use your lenses for what they are good at and not for what they are bad at. The 20mm is no lens for action, no lens for sports significantly faster than chess. Therefore, just don't use it for that, unless you want to be frustrated. However, if you do, please refrain from blaming the lens...

Is there a better general purpose lens than the panasonic 20mm f1.7?

There are two types of photographers: there are those who prefer a 35mm equivalent as normal lens and there are those who prefer a 50mm focal length. And there are those who prefer a 40mm equivalent focal length to both. I have always been a 50mm guy and have switched to 40mm as soon as I bought...

Is there a better general purpose lens than the panasonic 20mm f1.7?

The 20mm is a classic like 40mm on full frame. It may not be as widely used as 35mm and 50mm (full frame equivalents), but a very, very beautiful focal length. I know that I won't ever give that little gem away, at least as long as I shoot with µ4/3. I might even buy the Olympus 25mm, but my...

Adobe Camera Raw really does suck at E-M1 high ISO RAW. Iridient Rocks.

We agree very much, however, the grain gets much more beautiful with lower settings of the details slider of the sharpening settings. I also like to set luminance noise reduction to 10 sometimes, which makes the grain just a little bit more pleasant without loosing details.

Adobe Camera Raw really does suck at E-M1 high ISO RAW. Iridient Rocks.

What you see is what you get, if the detail slider of the sharpening setting is too high. The default value of 25 is way too high! At high ISO it just sharpens the noise which makes the image looking horrible. At ISO 2500 I set the detail slider to 0. The problem concerning the inadequate...

    Selling OMD-EM5 for EM-1 or GX7

At the moment I use the E-M5 and the GM1 and never had any problem with the different menu systems. The GM1 is a totally different camera and needs a different handling, therefore one has to adapt to a different camera anyway. The most difficult thing is not to touch the screen accidentally...

RawTherapee, in-file lens correction not picked up?

The tooltip says otherwise and so does the documentation. Yes, it does just that. If there isn't any information like that, that button has no effect. As far as I know, it does only distortion correction. But there is automatic CA correction: tab Raw -> Sensor with Bayer Matrix -> Chromatic...

Lenses. I really don't care about Sony as long as the lenses I need are not available. I could adopt like I did when µ4/3 did not offer the lenses I need, but I really prefer having native lenses. Sony has not offered the lenses for their Alpha system, they have not offered them for the NEX and...

Is 1/8000 shutter speed an absolute must?

It is definitely no absolute must and I have never needed it until recently when I bought a camera with shorter shutter speeds than 1/4000s. Since then I have used even shorter shutter speeds than 1/8000s (my GM1 has 1/16000 as shortest shutter speed).

    GM1 - now or later

Since I loved my Canon PowerShot S90, I knew that I would love the size of the GM1. However, the S90 had no touch screen and I have to admit, that I moved the focus area accidentally a lot at the beginning. But I got used to it very soon and I have had this problem very rarely since then. Some...

I'm not all that impressed by the Panasonic 14mm...am I the only one?

Only two lenses would be hard. If I could keep three lenses, I would keep the P14mm, P20mm and O45mm. If I had to choose only two, I could imagine any combination consisting of two of these primes, but most probably I would keep either the P14mm and the P20mm or the P20mm and the O45mm.

    GM1 - now or later

Yes, of course. The GM1 is exactly the camera one wants to buy, if one wants to buy the most portable camera without compromising image quality. Therefore, the 12-32mm is a lens one has to keep in order not to compromise the GM1, of course.

    GM1 - now or later

I love my GM1, but I would never sell my E-M5 for it and I would not sell the G6 for it, either. The GM1 is a gem, but its size requested some tradeoffs. This isn't bad, because none of the tradeoffs limits the photographer as long the GM1 is being used for what it is meant to be used for. The...

I'm not all that impressed by the Panasonic 14mm...am I the only one?

According to one review. Reviews differ from each other. According to LensTip both lenses perform about the same at the center. According to photozone the resolution of the 20mm is tremendously better wide open compared to the 14mm. However, I cannot see such a big difference myself in my...

I'm not all that impressed by the Panasonic 14mm...am I the only one?

Well, it happened that I accidentally used f/2.5 for a shot and redid it with f/5.6 immediately afterwards. At home the f/2.5 shot did wow me, because it was nearly equally good (technically) as the f/5.6 shot. However, it wasn't one of the relatively rare shots which need super sharp corners...

Not liking the consensus does not mean that the consensus is wrong. Just compare the reviews of the 14mm and the 20mm lenses at LensTip and one can see the difference immediately. All test sites which reviewed both lenses and nearly all owners of these two lenses come to the same conclusion...

To be honest, I like your shot very much and I can see, why you love this little lens. However, although your shot shows that one can take good photographs with it, it cannot show how sharp the lens is. I am with Robin: And it is stupendous considering its weight, too. All examples...

There is surely sample variation which may be relevant here and different people are doing different kind of photographs, which may be relevant, too. I'm not all that impressed by the Panasonic 14mm...am I the only one?

I have bought both the 20mm and the 14mm, too. However, I bought the 14mm, because it is so small and fits the GM1 very well. I need a very small bag to carry the GM1 with both pancakes and that's why I chose this one over the 15mm. It is a sharp lens in the middle (even wide open) and it isn't...

Panasonic GM1: mechanical shutter is triggered each time the camera is turned on

Last week I bought the Panasonic GM1 and I love this little gem. When I turn the camera on I hear a noise. The manual says that the noise is because of the dust reduction function, but when I turn the camera on without a lens, I can see that the mechanical shutter is triggered (the noise...

The 6D is a great camera and I hope you'll having great fun with it! However, it's a completely different beast, much bigger and heavier than the E-M5. I own an E-M5 and the 12-50mm as kit lens. When I saw the first shots, I thought that my copy was a bad one. Unfortunately, that was not the...
