    Leica T System

I can't remember whether it was Leica or an industry analyst of the day who said it but I also rmember that statement. Canon and Nikon were making fine gear but Olympus was the SLR company everybody wanted to be. So as weak as my unqualified support is, I also remember it to be true.

    Leica T System

And I said no you don't. The lens doesn't need to be coded. If the Leica adaptor is on the camera it'll fire. R lenses and Nikkor lenses don't have lens codes and reviewers have the shutter firing with those. Once the M adaptor is on it's easy to find adaptors from the M mount to other brands...

    Leica T System

No. It means that only lenses with 6 bit codes will pass focal length info to exif and have auto corrections applied. Some reviewers have already mounted R and other brand lenses by stacking adaptors. Gordon

Is the DOF difference between M4/3 and full-frame really 2 stops?

He said the diff between APSC and FF is 1.3 stops, not the diff between m43 and FF. DOF is an illusion, not empirically measurable. A few reasons that DOF might appear different. 1. The rated apertures of the lenses may not be exactly as advertised. 2. Slightly different focal point. 3...

ultimate wedding kit ? if you shoot weddings share your thoughts :)

A very good question. And one I'm not really sure about the answer. I've owned the PL25. I've also owned the older 43 version and the 20mm. For some reason none of them has gripped me like a 50mm in 35mm format. When I had an XE1 I liked the 35mm. Yes, I'm weird. It's probably a few smaller...

    Tiff/jpeg/orf ?????

TIFFs may not be usually compressed but they are a baked file. So by definition can't be as flexible (quite) as a raw file. As soon as you bake in exposure and white balance you limit how far the file can be pushed compared to a raw file. Gordon
  11. F

    Tiff/jpeg/orf ?????

I'm not Nic, but each raw converter has its own signature so any raw file will be a bit different from program to program. This includes DNG. Gordon

ultimate wedding kit ? if you shoot weddings share your thoughts :)

When I shoot m4/3 at a wedding I use: 7.5mm fish 12-35 2.8 45mm 1.8 60mm macro 75mm 1.8 EM1+EM5 I have no interest in the 35-100 as it would only cover the 75-100 range for me. The 40-150 is very interesting. As is the Nocitron. But I also shhot other systems: Leica: M240 and M9. 12mm...

My chimp is off too. Mainly because it slows everything down if it's on. But I still chimp when I get a chance, for important stuff. I think we need to note (although we're already aware) that different strokes for different folks applies. That and different locations, traditions, schedules...

OMD wedding pics and some thoughts about it :)

Shame about the flash not working for you. I get about the same results as when I shot Canon. I know Nikon is better in this regard (as are the Sony's I'm using ATM) but overall I had no significant issues with the FL50r or the Metz 58AF2. I wonder if it's the 600r being underpowered. I only use...

    Leica c.f M4/3

The connectors are Epsons as well. Used by Olympus and now Leica with the M 240, X2 and X Vario. Both Olympus and Leica are too small to have the R&D for that stuff when they can buy it off the shelf. The microphone kit is the same as well and you can even use the macro light on the Leica...

    Leica c.f M4/3

Already did. I have an M9. Tried real hard to resist the M (type 240). Caved. The thing with Leica is.... Image quality isn't remarkably better. An A7 has slightly better IQ and takes Leica lenses (mine works well with the ones I have, although some wides have issues). The new M is still quite...

I'm rarely nice..... I just find it dissapointing that people can make judgement and assumption on the net about someone they don't know and have never met. And the oher thing is... Actors and other people in the movie industry spend day/months/years surrounded by cameras and experts on...

Background blur comparison with different lenses and sensors

You're close to your subject and background. A 2 stop change in aperture is going to be measured in inches, not feet at these distances. If your 50mm 1.8 didn't show a huge change buying a 2.8zoom wont either. The differences in changing formats and apertures are subtle. It's up to the...

Chad, Go get that 600R and try auto mode on your family today! Now!. Go on, we'll wait....... Agree on the focusing. It's not the light level. It's contrast. The venues with really yellow bulbs or limited spectrum lights really make CADF struggle. I use a fish for dancing shots mostly so no AF...

I tried to let the above comment go but....... Really? What in that image makes you think that George Clooney, or anyone, for that matter doesn't know about cameas and didn't make a considered decision based on his own criteria. How do you know that he's not a quality photographer? Many...

Why is there no cheap fast 50 mm equivalent prime?

Yep. Not many Leica 24mm lenses for under a couple of bills though. And again a 24mm Summilux costs more than a 50mm Summilux. Gordon
  26. F

Why is there no cheap fast 50 mm equivalent prime?

No. Not really. Yes, lenses are made to cover the image circle they cover but a 25mm lens is still a 25mm lens. If you look at the 75mm 1.8 for example, it's a simpler lens to design and is similar in price to the Canon 85. It doesn't hurt that the 20 and 25mm lenses for m43 are better built...
  27. F

Why is there no cheap fast 50 mm equivalent prime?

It's because they're different lenses. A 20/25mm is more complex to build than a 50. Look at Canikon. As the lenses get wider they get more expensive. Gordon

    Photo websites that I hate...

I like darker backgrounds. White pages with photos are harder to concentrate on the image. The eye is drawn to highlights so a white background is always pulling my eye away from the actual interesting stuff. It also makes images appear darker vs a black bg that makes them pop. Mid to darkish...

Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 Review Part 1 - First Impressions and Comparisons to 45/75m

I've read the article you cited several times over the years and nowhere does it use the term bokeh to describe the amount of blur. In the same article it describes several times bokeh as a description of the blur in qualitative terms not quantitative. The problem is several fold but here are a...

Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 Review Part 1 - First Impressions and Comparisons to 45/75m

Jeffery. I agree with you. I know what the OP is trying to say, although I'm not convinced as to his usage of the word bokeh, when it comes to photography. The OP would probably be better using the direct derivative, boke (no H) to describe blur (as an object), whereas bokeh is accepted to mean...

    Is your lens too sharp...

Yep. I generally don't like close portraits that are too sharp. I carry two 50mm lenses to weddings exactly for that reason. I also have a very lovely CV 75mm 1.8 that is beautiful with bridal portraits. Environmental portraits I like razor sharp. There's also a big difference between...

EVFs vs OVFs and other urban legends

Nope. The EM1 histogram displays, based on the jpeg settings selected. So if you change contrast, that will be reflected in the histogram. The Leicas use the actual raw data off the sensor (M8,9, monochrom, ME and type 240). And if you zoom in they display a histogram based only on the zoomed...

EVFs vs OVFs and other urban legends

When I look through a camera viewfinder I would prefer to see what the camera can record. If I want to see the world as my eye sees it, I just lower the camera. That works for me. Modern OVF's are a pale imitation of the older cameras, like the OM1,2 and 4. Most modern OVF's, even the good ones...

    Full switch to micro 4/3?

with my EM5 I got 15 or so random shots a wedding. It was the grip. The shutter would hit my hip and the focus was so damn quick it'd shoot the ground. Better on the EM1. I use mainly FL50r's. The Metz 58af2 has the funky auto mode as well. Totally agree about wanting a Sony FE 85 and 135...

    Full switch to micro 4/3?

You can completely eliminate the flash lag on m4/3 by switching to auto. Never say never..... I only have the 135 1.8 Zeiss and the 70-400 GII but both of those are stunning, especially the 135 which I am in absolute love with, despite it being huge. Absolutely. It's the most perfect standard I've ever used. Like the 75mm Oly but wider and with shallower DOF...

    Full switch to micro 4/3?

again.... I'm not seeing this. Canon has radio. What does Nikon do that the Olympus system won't? The Olympus has 4 groups (3 plus the hotshoe). It allows a mix of manual and TTL. It can all be controlled from the back of the camera. You can mix Metz and Olympus guns in the wireless setup. I...

    Full switch to micro 4/3?

Interestingly, the points raised as negatives are not what I experience at my weddings. In my usage (30 weddings per year), the EM1, 75mm and TTL flash at a reception are the thing I am finding the most difficult to replace as I move to Sony. Different areas have different wedding environments...

Is SONY A7/A7r a real game changer? What can we expect next?

I'm not seeing this battery life. My lowest count, using an original battery, is between 350 and 400 shots with airplane mode turned on. With rapid fire shooting (at a wedding for example) I get 500+ shots per battery. Last wedding I used two batteries and got 1126 images. Anyway, how many...

Is SONY A7/A7r a real game changer? What can we expect next?

Leica's an example. Mainly because unlike anyone else, they're making a profit from cameras. There are far more top end cameras in enthusiast amateurs hands than professionals. I almost never go to a wedding without seeing a 5D3 and a "L" somethingorother stuck on the front of it. Last week it...

Is SONY A7/A7r a real game changer? What can we expect next?

Not entirely true. You can't put a Noctilux on a D800e, but you can on an A7r. So you can't always get those files from a DSLR. I get what you're saying about "game changer". Everyone will have their meaning of what that is. I consider the combination of an EVF, 35mm 36MP sensor and EM1 sized...

Is SONY A7/A7r a real game changer? What can we expect next?

Sounds like a complaint we heard about m43 not too long ago. Not enough lenses. Except they went on and on and on and on and on and on.... about not having "fast" zooms and "pro" primes. This time it's that there are no "affordable" lenses. To me it just sounds like your pissed that they're out...

Is SONY A7/A7r a real game changer? What can we expect next?

I can think of a few.. - can adapt almost any lens ever made. - histogram in the viewfinder. - electronic level. - fast focus using rear screen. - articulated LCD screen. - pre chimping. - portability. - 36MP (why my shooting partner just picked up an A7R for his Canon lenses) - magnified...
