Sept was very busy. Just a couple of times for birding. Oct was even busier. No birding at all. Finally able to go today.:) Several shots from Sept and today. I felt so rusty after not being able to touch cameras for more than a month. Glad some eagles/hawks were cooperating, flying toward me or...

Regarding Blackrapid Breathe line of products, the anchor is metal, and very solid. There is a rubber insert between the anchor and the tripod mount, and it doesn't get loose. The long tele will be hung down (lens down). When you walk around, there are two stopper clips on the strap, and you...

    Olympus MC-20 Teleconverter

I agree with you it's always better to get close to the subject in the field and use the lens without any TC. I found 300mmF4 +MC20 doesn't necessarily produce stunningly clear images when subject is far away. In fact, I had an impression that cropping from images shot by 300mm +MC14 may produce...

    Man was i stupid today

Center start for small birds is actually not a good selection. I tried 7x7 or all grids without start/priority for small birds and got decent results, but flying small birds are still too tough for me.

I would try a little faster shutter speed, like 1/2000, 1/2500 when the lighting condition allows ISO somewhere around 2000 or less. Using MC20 is a battle with high ISO in my experience.

How to make lens caps (for TCs) slightly tighter?

I measured the depth of the hollow channel again, and my BC-3 (Vietnam) measures 3.9mm in depth on the outer side, and 4.5mm inner side, so the bottom is slanted. Maybe the outer edge has just a slope. The lock pin protrudes about 1.0mm so 4mm diameter O ring may be just perfect fit!
  25. masayoshi

How to make lens caps (for TCs) slightly tighter?

Thank you. The width of the hollow part I indicated with a pink circle in my image is actually 4mm, so it could work really well. The only concern is the depth is 3.7mm, so the O ring could protrude 0.3mm, and that could be too much, and too tight. Shaving off 0.3mm of silicone will be very...

How to make lens caps (for TCs) slightly tighter?

Thank you all for various ideas! I actually like the cap keeper idea by @ac12 since I have Dremel drill and can make tiny holes through the protruding part of the cap. Then I can connect the cap to the D-ring of the GoWing device, using strap cord or something I can get in Joann Fabric. Yes! I...

    Olympus MC-20 Teleconverter

I agree. 300mmF4 with MC-20 is so tricky to use (because of high ISO), but 40-150F2.8 with MC-20 was relatively easy. 600mm equivalent FOV with the size of this lens/TC combo is amazing.

How to make lens caps (for TCs) slightly tighter?

Thanks for chiming in, for seemingly a 'minor' problem! Here's a picture of 'interim' solution (two pieces of black GAFF tape make friction between the cap and mount larger), but the tape tends to come off after a while, and also leaves some adhesive on the lens mount. Thanks @oldracer...

Lets talk CAF settings with the EM1MK11 and firmware 3.1

You can tie AF Home function to the selection of S-AF/C-AF AND AF pattern, or you can just say AF Home changes only AF pattern without changing S-AF/C-AF selection. In the former case, if for example, 'Home' is set up as 'S-AF Single point', hitting AF Home button will switch to S-AF Single...

Having a blond moment on focus fine tune

You are right. I was thinking Nikon's AF fine tune system, which doesn't have this wide/tele setups. I can't remember I did that for my PL100-400. Thanks for pointing it out!

Having a blond moment on focus fine tune

Maybe slightly off topic, but I want to go back and forth between AF fine tuning session on static subject, versus real life BIF shooting. What I mean is, if the AF is front focusing, does it end up higher keeper rate if the bird is coming towards you? Most of BIFFers care when the bird is...

Having a blond moment on focus fine tune

Mike, are you using PL100-400 and find out AF is back focusing? Is it only at long end or throughout the range of the zoom? AF fine tune allows only one focal length, so it would be best to do the tuning at the focal length you use most.

OK how good is the CAF on the EM1MK11 firmware 3.1

My default for BIF is cross-like 5 box with center AF priority for big birds like hawks and eagles. If the bird is small and fly from side to side (like ducks), I use 7x3 boxes without center AF priority/start (horizontally long AF area). Now, I feel only advantage of using EM1X is the ability...

OK how good is the CAF on the EM1MK11 firmware 3.1

Comparisons between center AF start versus center AF priority would be informative. IME, center AF start sometimes hunt longer than I want if the background is sky and center area goes to the background.

Having a blond moment on focus fine tune

If the AF brings the focal plane in front of the subject (front focusing), you need to increase the AF fine tune number. If the AF brings the focal plane back of (behind) the subject (back focusing), you need to decrease the AF fine tune number. Does 'focusing past the subject' mean back...

High ISO image test So, I found marguerite shrub in the shade in my backyard, and took shots with three cameras, EM1X+300mmF4+MC14, D500+200-500 (all at 500 end), D850+500PF. All shots in M mode, F5.6, and EC set to +0.3, center point metering. I changed SS to get different ISO. IS was ON;)...

    Image quality - EM1 MK II / EM1X vs Nikon D500

It may or may not be relevant for you, but I was surprised when I had a test shot of sparrow in the shade of the tree in my backyard with D850, and the file (ISO3200) came out very clean. Image quality - EM1 MK II / EM1X vs Nikon D500

I think OP's asking specifically about high ISO IQ (I believe it's about noise), so let's not take others things (AF, price, ergonomics, etc) into account for the OP's sake. I want to find it out myself, because the image comparison tool in DPreview doesn't tell me what kind of lens and F...

    Image quality - EM1 MK II / EM1X vs Nikon D500

Here's what I would do, I guess. Set up a tripod (got a Gitzo series 3), and turn off any IS (both lens/body IS for Olympus, and lens IS for Nikon). Find out a subject in the shade. Something like a pine tree branches and pine cones, which allow analysis of details, and the noise. Maybe place a...

    Image quality - EM1 MK II / EM1X vs Nikon D500

Hi, I have those lenses and cameras and haven't done any side-by-side tests yet, but to address your question, what kind of tests and files you want to see? I can take images of something available in my backyard this evening, say pinecones or brick wall, with EM1X+300F4 with 1.4TC and...

    300mm f/4 really that poor?

That bald eagle shot (7:35) with D850, 600mm F/4E is terrible. If that is the image from $12K lens, I wouldn't buy. My Tamron 150-600mm zoom can do better with 1/10 of the price, even with a 1.4 TC on it.
