Panasonic 25mm 1.4 for $359, Amazon Warehouse deal

I just received the lens. It came in the original box, with the corner smashed in about 3/4", and with all items. As far as I can tell it's new and never been mounted to a camera, I can't see any marks on the flange. I took a few shots with it to check out the quality. The corners have some...

Panasonic 25mm 1.4 for $359, Amazon Warehouse deal

I ordered one too, thanks for the heads up. It says it's repackaged. I'm guessing they have a few of these that the packaging was damaged. maybe they are otherwise new?

    Showcase Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5

I think there is something wrong with your lens. My lens is one of the sharpest I have, even at the corners. My friend (who has a 5Dmk2) even remarked about how crisp the corners were with this lens.

$150 refurb Acer 11.6" Chromebook, 8+-hour battery life (Haswell processor)

My C720 with Fedora has been great, I even got WinXP working in a virtual machine. With nLite I was able to get the WinXP install down to 600 MB or so; I decided the SSD is too small for Win7. It's plenty fast. I just ordered another one for my friend going off to graduate school, going to...

$150 refurb Acer 11.6" Chromebook, 8+-hour battery life (Haswell processor)

I'm writing this on the C720, running Fedora Linux. It's quick! The SSD is good for 311 MB/s read which is great considering the price point. My refurb looked new, except for some stuff on the screen that I cleaned off. Here are some pros/cons so far: Pros: Very responsive (the CPU is 5x...

$150 refurb Acer 11.6" Chromebook, 8+-hour battery life (Haswell processor)

I'm not sure if you've tried any Haswell processors (especially the lower-end ones), but the GHz is not all that matters. Over the years they have taken a different approach than AMD, and they've made their processors more efficient for the speed, versus just adding cores and GHz. All my...

$150 refurb Acer 11.6" Chromebook, 8+-hour battery life (Haswell processor)

Ubuntu Linux works fine on 2GB, that's what my old netbook had, as long as the drive is decently fast. This one has a M.2 SSD, so I hope so. But if you want to run multiple virtual machines it will be pretty limiting. Occasional use of a Win7 VM (with 1 GB) would work ok I think; that's...

I've been lusting over this lens for a while now, and I tried to get in on the Lightning deal but I was too slow. :( But with both of these discounts it's $15 cheaper than that deal as I don't have to pay tax. So thanks, rusteel and duke!!

Olympus Looks at E-M5 Banding with 20mm

    "Shimmering" manual focus

It's not the point of critical focus, it's really the X/Y movement of the image on the sensor. In the case of aliasing on "straight" lines, X/Y movement will just move the funny colors around but they will still be there. A higher resolution sensor is better. This could mean that you have...

    "Shimmering" manual focus

In practical terms, it might not matter much, but do you see my technical point? The screen resolution is a lot less than the sensor resolution, especially using the EVF. If the screen is aliasing this doesn't guarantee the maximum sensor resolution. If the sensor is aliasing, this does mean...

    "Shimmering" manual focus

I would expect that the LCDs would use bicubic interpolation, and therefore anti-aliasing, but maybe this is not the case on all cameras. It would be easy enough to see if the saved image has aliasing when the LCD shows this "shimmering." If it is the case of only the display aliasing, then...
  19. R

    "Shimmering" manual focus

"Shimmering" is caused by aliasing. This means that the lens resolution is higher than the anti-aliasing filter on the sensor. When aliasing occurs, it's not really a good thing as it can show up in the final image. I don't really notice it on my G3, but I've heard the Olympus cameras have...

Why does this photo look strange?

This is a classic example of longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA); there are different focal planes for different colors. This is particularly hard to correct in post. Stopping down the aperture will help a lot. Transverse chromatic aberration (TCA) is a lot easier to fix, and the...

    G3 worth getting?

I feel the jpegs are so good out of my G3 that I rarely shoot RAW anymore. Even pixel peeping I'm hard pressed to see the difference. Sometimes when the white balance is questionable I'll save RAW. To my eye the Olympus OOC jpegs are too saturated. I'm not sure if "balance" can be...

G3: Fast way of getting good AF control when using EVF

The exposure of the saved image does not change after half-press, although the G3 does tend to underexpose. The exposure shown on the LCD does change. If you don't want this, turn "shutter speed effect" on.

    G3 worth getting?

I am a long time user of the GF1, and when the G3 came down to an attractive price, I jumped on it. I'm very happy with the G3. ISO3200 shots are well beyond my expectations! It's responsive and intuitive, there are just enough buttons to get the job done. The EVF is great for manual...

GH2 not another BUG please - HELP

Yes, that's right, in aperture priority the camera will adjust the shutter, and you can fine tune the EV. That's how it works on my GF1 and G3. Sometimes the metering tends to underexpose (especially the G3) but it works pretty well. I haven't seen much discrepancy between live view and the...

Oly 9-18 on Panny body ?

I use mine all the time, previously on the GF1 and now the G3. It's my favorite lens; small and light. It has excellent resolution, and fast focus speed. The barrel distortion correction works just fine. There is no LCA correction on Oly lenses, and this lens does show some LCA in the corners.

    Sunset halo problem, help!

The outer yellowed ring looks like lens flare, probably from the filter. The inner transition is probably caused by the fact that different colors on the sensor will saturate at different intensities.

Showcase Minolta 50mm f/1.4 MD Rokkor

I have disassembled my MD Rokkor 50/1.4. It's pretty easy, but make sure you make witness marks on the helicoid before you take it apart; it is a multistart thread. There is an inner and an outer thread, you'll need to mark them both. The fine-tune for infinity focus is from the front of the...

    45-200mm or 100-300mm?

I own both. The focal length of the 45-200 is much more useful than the 100-300. I am too pleased with the 45-200 but the 100-300 does indeed have much sharper images. If you find yourself at 200 a lot, I would say go for the 100-300. Birding or other nature photography lends itself to the...

Why do our cameras have shutters?

Our cameras have an nMOS sensor. So far, only CCD sensors have interline transfer. So with an nMOS sensor without a shutter, the problem is twofold. First, there would be a rolling shutter; fast moving objects would be skewed when exposed, because the pixel wells would be integrating as the...

Panasonic Direct - Needs Some Work

I called again today and decided to cancel my order. Jim said there was no ETA for the Brown G3 camera kit. Thin shoulder strap for GF1?

I do remember them being a bit tough to get in, but not impossible. Keep trying, they should go. I can't remember if I used a tool to get them in, maybe some pliers would help to push them in. I think it would be a good idea to cover the other parts of the camera with tape while...

Showcase Minolta 50mm f/1.4 MD Rokkor

This is a very sharp lens! At f/1.4 it has quite a bit of longitudinal chromatic abberation (halo effect) but at f/2 it starts to shape up nicely. In the later models (like my MD-Rokkor) the helicoid is aluminum on aluminum. This is nice for weight savings, but similar metal-on-metal...

GF1 Performance I don't do video, but I do like the fast cards for high speed shooting or to reduce the delay from shooting to preview on my GF1. I tested my previous card at 13 MB/s write on my PC, and I recently bought a Sandisk Extreme III card that tested at 23 MB/s. I saw a small...

Re: GF1 video Hack advice wanted

Video and stills are handled very differently by the sensor and the image processor. In any case there is a limitation somewhere that does not allow the GF1 to achieve video at 1080p. If it was a raw processing power limitation I would imagine the processor could do real 1080p at a lower bit...

I played around with this hack a while ago, and I agree, I don't think the sensor is capable of really doing 1080p.
