Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III Released

Kind of an underwhelming release but what did we expect with no new sensors available. No new EVF panel is a little shocking. I guess it’s too much to expect the one that goes into Panasonic S series but I would think there’s some middle ground to be had. Oh well.. At least the body shape is...

New firmware available for E-M1X, E-M1 Mkii and E-M5 Mkiii

Very true! One of the last EM5II updates restored ability to autofocus in Video Mode, which they somehow removed in a prior update. This was not mentioned in the update documentation.

Does the E-M5 Mark III have a plastic feel?

i thought it did. I think EM1 and EM5II feel more solid and dense.

    New Olympus Camera Mid February

I wonder what will be new. I am guessing a new higher res viewfinder, but beyond that, I am not sure. There’s not a new sensor available, is there? Might be a tough sell without one.

    Thinking about my next camera

I think it has to do with processor too. Higher end 16MP bodies like GX7 also had 12 bit files from electronic shutter. I think newer high end bodies have even faster readout speeds and the banding in certain lighting situations is less of an issue .

    Concert Photography with EPL-5 & Pana 20mm & Oly 45mm

EPL5 has the older 2 axis stabilization system. Later models from EPL7 onward have the much better 3 or 5 axis stabilization system. It can really work magic for some shots . on the other side of the pond here ,most bigger venues have similar rules of “ no interchangeable lens cameras”. I...

    Thinking about my next camera

those seem to be the best options if you must have 4K. If you can make do with 1080, the Olympus cameras you mentioned , EM1 and EM5II , can both be had for really good prices now.

    Concert Photography with EPL-5 & Pana 20mm & Oly 45mm

These are great! It’s not easy taking photos in rowdy shows like these. Later EPL or other Olympus and Panasonic bodies with better IBIS and better processors would probably yield somewhat better sharper and cleaner results. Have you considered a longer lens? Something like Olympus 75mm or...

Shootout GAS attack: Oly EM1mkii vs Sony A7iii

I found the Sony 85mm/1.8 to be extremely sharp and detailed when I tried it out. Much sharper than the Olympus 45mm /1.8 and as good if not better than the premium m43 glass like Olympus 75mm1.8. Which is very impressive because it’s not a very expensive lens in the Sony lineup. I also didn’t...

E-M5 mk III released at US$1199

both felt more plasticky than EM1II and EM5II. Total finish felt less solid than those cameras. Dials and buttons about the same I suppose. Some of this is probably somewhat subjective, so I asked my friend , who is a Panasonic GH5 user , what he thought . He tried them all with me , and also...

E-M5 mk III released at US$1199

I did try both but paid more attention to the black one since that’s the one I would get. The silver top felt and looked pretty non-metal though, to be fair, I didn’t have a silver EM5II on hand to compare.

E-M5 mk III released at US$1199

I was able to try it yesterday. Unfortunately, I have to agree with reports of plasticky feeling finish/ construction . I find EM5II and EM1II feel much better, more solid. Viewfinder seems good. The slight reduction in size doesn’t feel too bothersome. The redesigned grip doesn’t really...

It’s too bad we can’t can’t use the bottom part of old battery grip with this like we could with previous transition. :(

Would Replacing My GX85 with an EM5 II Be a Good Idea?

I made a similar switch, from GX7, mainly for the bigger viewfinder. I’ve been enjoying the sturdier build and water resistance too.

    Alert : EM5 Mk3 Release this year - it’s (well nearly) official

I agree. I expect the same 20MP sensor as in other newer top m43 models and maybe slightly better IBIS and that's pretty much it. I would prefer that they keep the body the same so the EM5II grip can be used. I would be shocked if it had a newer better higher MP sensor .

A young but very professional local act, Tempt, channeling 80s pop metal acts like Def Leppard. This took place in fairly small space full of enthusiastic fans and friends and I like how I captured them in most of the frame with the singer just sort of hovering overhead from the stage. Trying...

Seriously considering the S1/S1R. Convince me otherwise

Sony is nice if one wants a complete system right now, but I am sure the other brands will fill out their lens collections fairly soon.

Primes vs zooms for indoor concert photography

most people photographing concerts photograph faster moving rock bands in more dim venues. So, that’s probably why you got the answers you did. I would love to be able to use one bright zoom instead of switching lenses all the time. But since I routinely have to use ISO 3200 with with the...

Urgent: one E-M1 for recording movie AND fire a few flashes for still photos

Are you sure there’s not another mode where you can take a photo without video being split? EM5II has one like that. It will be a JPEG, but better than nothing .

    Custom art filters on OMD10mII

I don’t think it’s possible to add them manually, but Olympus does add some occasionally with firmware updates. I think Bleach Bypass filter was added this way. I wish they would add the Black and White filters that are exclusive to PEN F to other models.

    lightroom 5.7 and em5II....

Why not Lightroom 6? If you’re used to LR tools and plan to keep the EM5II for a while, I would just do that. There’s plug in/hack to enable Dehaze feature on it too.

    Add-on viewfinders for Lumix cameras

Unfortunately, that’s all - Gx1 and Lx7 are the only cameras that work with the excellent LVF2. I think it would’ve been great if later models accepted it because it’s much bigger than viewfinders in any non-SLR styled Panasonics other than GX8.

    Pen-F discontinued

I don't see the point of a weathersealed PEN-F when neither Olympus nor Panasonic have any small weathersealed prime lenses as companions. If Olympus decided to add weathersealing to the small F1.8 lenses, then it would be a different story. As long as there are no new sensors coming in, I...

I think the Gx8, G85, EM5II and PenF were game changers.....

So, I wouldn't get any stabilization at all, with an Olympus 45mm then, right?

I think the Gx8, G85, EM5II and PenF were game changers.....

So, it’s the OIS? I am confused now. Does iBIS work by moving the sensor in video mode in any resolution?

are there people who own Panasonic 20mm/1.7 and 15mm/1.7, and 14mm/2.5?

that's really good to know. I do like how skinny 20mm/1.7 is and the field of view seems more natural for casual use. Thanks

are there people who own Panasonic 20mm/1.7 and 15mm/1.7, and 14mm/2.5?

interesting that you did that. Did you feel that it wasnt offering enough over the other lenses? I just wonder if it'll be getting much use with the other 2 lenses so close and available

are there people who own Panasonic 20mm/1.7 and 15mm/1.7, and 14mm/2.5?

Looking hard at the 15mm/1.7 but since I do have the other 2 , I do wonder if it's a little too redundant. :) if anyone owns any combination of these, I would love to hear of your experiences .
  34. S

I think the Gx8, G85, EM5II and PenF were game changers.....

if only GX8 had stabilization for video. maybe GX10 will have the same form factor , but I suspect EM5 with 20MP will come out first. Might be hard to resist.

I happened to have my camera at the bar

Pretty good! not sure if you know, Olympus's digital teleconverter mode actually resamples the cropped result back to original high resolution, which can be handy when you want that extra reach. The results are a little dirty but for more stylized kind of photos, not at all bad. As for...

    Renting lenses for a concert

The faster the better , unless venue has super bright lighting. I like Olympus 45mm/1.8 and 75mm/1.8. For something wider, Panasonic 20mm/1.7. With brighter lighting, even Rokinon fisheye F3.5 can be pretty cool . Depends on where you are and what kind of photos you're looking to get...

    Renting lenses for a concert

Em5II - no autofocus in video with newest firmware?

So, I went to the Photo Plus Expo and Olympus tech people were not able to auto focus in video either. The most senior guy seemed fairly concerned , and after spending about a half hour with my EM5II , including resetting it to default settings, said he would pass this information on to the...

Seeking recommendations for a decent video microphone

I use that small Tascam 2X with EM5II. It’s very small and pretty good. Not much low end for rock, but nice for vocals. I hope you know about the amazing hidden video feature on EM1, the zoom in/zoom out during filming using a function button. Great with bright primes in dim spaces, like...
