Zooms vs Primes - a circular journey

I started with photography in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Zooms were truly big, heavy, slow and mediocre, with few exceptions. I stayed with primes almost as a matter of religion until Nikon introduced the 80-200mm f/2.8, which got me thinking (re-thinking). For the most part, I am...

Olympus 12-50 what's the general opinion of this lens

I owned one for about two years. The comments above are accurate. What I liked most about it: going down to 12mm and up to 50mm, it made it a nice single lens choice. What I liked least about it: very slow at the long end. Bonus: the waterproof feature came in handy a few times; no...

    Sustainability of µ4/3 long term....

In my opinion, this is the only sane approach. It is not possible to accurately predict which format will be around in five years, nor is it possible to predict which manufacturers will survive the current turmoil. Use it, use it well, fret not.

    Few ?'s about EM5 MkII ?

Not true. Sensor development has been largely static across the industry as a whole for several years, leaving aside a few FX sensors.

Should I exchange this lens? (40-150 PRO)

Echo the comment on the tripod - a good, study one that's not over-extended, with the self-timer to fire the shutter. If you're going to test critical sharpness, you have to eliminate the other potential causes of lack of sharpness.

    Panasonic 35-100 owners !!!

Yes. In Nikon FX days, I used an 80-200mm zoom ALL THE TIME. I always had the 300/4 in the bag and almost never used it - and I always had two bodies, so changing lenses was not the issue. For my personal uses, 200mm was enough reach - which is why I remain completely happy with the...

    Sell my Nikon FX stuff?

I could echo m43happy's post (see my sig below). I hesitated for a couple of years and had all the Nikon FX and DX gear alongside the m4/3 gear, but it never got used - and that was a message to me. There are some things FX does better but if you're on the fence those few things probably aren't...

    Glass Screen Protector for GX7?

I hear you and definitely agree on the last point, but resale is a lot easier if the rear screen is pristine. I've never bought a camera planning to resell it, but it happens. ;)

I bought several from Amazon a few years ago. They're compact and came in two different configurations, straight and 90 degrees. They take next to no space even in a small bag.

    Glass Screen Protector for GX7?

My older son just bought a GX7 (very nice camera!) and wanted to put a glass screen protector on the rear LCD. We haven't found one that's specifically sold for the GX7. Did we miss something? Alternatively, would a screen protector sold for another camera work (i.e., which cameras have...

US members: Does your copy of Photoshop Elements work on PC and Mac?

I have a copy of 12 and 13. Both had both disks. 12 doesn't care how many machines I install it on. 13 checks and will allow only two machines to be active at the same time.

12-40 PRO as well as Primes!?

Now you can see how it works out for you. One of the interesting things that you can do with Lightroom, and probably with many of its competitors, is use the metadata to analyze your lens use. I've sold a few lenses after it became quantitatively clear that I really wasn't using them.

    In Camera Charging

Cables in cameras scare the crap out of me. Insert the connector backwards, it's dead. Knock the cable connector smartly and break the board. Snag the cable and the camera hits the floor. Too many insertions and it just wears out. It's so much easier and safer to put batteries in a charger...

    Pana 100-300 rough zoom action??

That would be my response, too. I don't know what they are selling for today, but I think I paid $450 for mine new and for the price the build quality and optical performance are just fine. It's not a $1200 lens, but that was a given going in.

EM5 Card error and sometimes freezing

It's possible that you have either driver issues with the card reader, or physical (contacts) issues with the reader. Do you have an alternative reader you can try? I have had a couple of readers go flakey over the years - they are not generally high-end, long-life equipment and driver support...

EM5 woes. Move to GX7, EM1, or wait?

Your lists and posts are great reading, even for the unpersuaded. ;) I take it that you're ok with the E-M5II without a grip? I like the E-M5 quite a bit but without at least the landscape portion of the accessory grip I find it unusable (or, un-holdable, to be a little more precise). Can...

The acid test - who's going to upgrade to the E-M5 ii ?

Nice. :bravo-009: I bet I'm the only one here who wishes Olympus would adopt a power switch that was coaxial with the front dial? :D Neither the E-M5 nor the E-M1/M10/M5II switches do much for me, though the new version does give me a pleasing little bit of nostalgia from the 70s. :)

12-40 PRO as well as Primes!?

Speaking as the owner of a 12-35/2.8 Panasonic, I think the comments and your summary are going to be right for most people. The exceptions that come to mind immediately are (1) people for whom using prime lenses is a nearly religious imperative (not being humorous or sarcastic) and (2) cases...

E-M5 mark 2 rear dial not working!

I recall lots of dial inserts popping off. I don't remember the dials themselves popping off or becoming non-functional on the E-M5. The only dial I remember actually falling off completely was on an E-M10, and that seems to have been an isolated case.

    LR5 'TRIAL' reads ORF but...UPDATE

Yes, that's why I mentioned "...the cameras you're using." Until you decide you need an unsupported camera, there's not really a whole lot of reason to worry about transitioning from Aperture - but I thought I'd ask anyway! :)

    Arguments for a 400mm f4 for m4/3

I hope no one is against the system expanding and maturing. There is a question about which holes need plugging sooner and which lenses are more likely to be reasonably successful commercially, since I think everyone would agree that the last thing mirrorless in general and m4/3 in particular...

My brand new E-m5 MKII is really sleepy...

The mercy is that in most cases, once you find the setting and figure out how you want it, you can leave it alone. The rest can hopefully be dealt with with MySets or button assignments.

The acid test - who's going to upgrade to the E-M5 ii ?

As Thom Hogan sometimes says, more data is always better. Even if you don't need it today, you may be able to exploit it later, and you can almost never go back and re-do the shot later. This is the kind of tech that stands a good chance of being exploited better by photogs in the field than...

The acid test - who's going to upgrade to the E-M5 ii ?

In spite of my own personal and possibly temporary take on the MKII, it's possible that as people like you explore the hi res mode we will discover that it has real benefits in terms of color, noise or other image attributes. It will be good to see what develops (pardon the pun, if indeed that...

The acid test - who's going to upgrade to the E-M5 ii ?

If I were a landscape photographer, or had higher end video needs, the E-M5 II might be compelling. I'm not and I don't, and since basic IQ hasn't changed in several years, this one's a yawn for me - YMMV.

Still Camera is Coming to an End

If you step back, I don't think it would be surprising at all if cameras, at least as the people who frequent this forum think of them, disappeared as commercial products within a decade. Consider the degree of change from the middle of the 19th century to 1950. Consider again the degree of...

The acid test - who's going to upgrade to the E-M5 ii ?

The bottom line is that as far as basic IQ goes, neither Olympus nor Panasonic has presented a compelling upgrade rationale for roughly three years. We have better ergonomics, true. We have better convenience features (example: wifi). We have better EVFs. Video has taken some very significant...
