what photography related item did you buy this week?

There is a lot of field curvature wide open - the center will be in focus but anything to the sides in the same plane won't be sharp, or the converse. I found that I needed to screw the rear element group in tight and focusing was improved.

Recommendations for a new photo editing computer

I went with liquid cooling about 3-4 years ago. It works like a charm and keeps the CPU cool all the time. IMHO it's the single biggest improvement in computer noise reduction.

what photography related item did you buy this week?

Take that damned beauty ring and put it in the box. I tried the ring that came with my 300 Pro and it was scary to handle the unmounted lens when I pulled it out of the camera bag. They are slippery and could contribute to a dropped lens/expensive repair bill. I use a yellow Livestrong...

Has Anyone Tried the Shapeways Hotshoe Weaver Rail Adaptor?

Here's the part I'm considering. I'm looking at mounting one of the low cost red dot sights to my camera so I can actually use the MC-20 with the 300mm f4 for shooting wildlife.

Olympus raising PRO lens prices February 1, 2020.

I think Olympus is going to be using frequent rotating sales to move product; the higher prices will be MSRP but purchase prices will vary all over the place to entice new customers to buy the bodies and lower line lenses and current customers to upgrade bodies and lenses. In the pre-internet...

My guess is that it will stay at the same list price. Buy one now while they're $50 off.

what photography related item did you buy this week?

Ordered a JJC autofocus calibration test chart. With the 40-150 and 300 Pro, plus the MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters in my optics collection, I figured that it was time to make sure everything focuses properly.

what photography related item did you buy this week?

My MC-20 arrived today - and the store rebated the new Olympus teleconverter $50 discount even though I ordered it in December. I love to deal with The Camera Store in Calgary! Now all I need is something other than the dark, rainy, cold weather that's hanging over Vancouver right now so I can...

Has anyone found reliable third party batteries and charger for E-M1 mk II?

When you figure that the price of an Olympus battery is only a few percent more than what you spent on the camera, it's worth the peace of mind and warranty protection to cough up the $20-40 for an Olympus battery. I gave up on agonizing over pennies for this hobby. I spend way more on coffee...

Super zoom vs. 2 lens kit.

I turn the zoom ring with my fingers all the time - no issue there. It may be more heavily damped than a few other lenses but IMO not as stiff as some people complain. If I have the tripod mount resting on the heel of my left hand, I zoom with my thumb quite easily.
  23. Carbonman

Super zoom vs. 2 lens kit.

The 40-150 Pro is a special lens; I use the 12-100, then for some reason figure that I should use the 40-150 for some additional reach, so put that on the camera and add the 12-40 to the bag. As soon as I shoot a few pictures with the 40-150 again it becomes one of those "ahh, that's why I love...

Super zoom vs. 2 lens kit.

The 12-100 is an incredible lens, in part because of the dual stabilization. I took it with me to a symposium and found it to be quite good for everything from group shots to scenery to night shots. As you already know, it's very sharp. It's usually my everyday carry lens when I don't have...

I've had good service the 2 times I've had to get equipment repaired. They did screw up the return address on one which added a couple of weeks using my backup body but the other went perfectly.

what photography related item did you buy this week?

Had to replace my CPU and motherboard 15 months ago. Gritted my teeth and went to Win 10. There are some things I hate about it and a few changes I love. Support for Win 7 ends in another couple of months, so it's probably time to bow to the inevitable.

Please advise me on telephoto zooms

Or just quit using the hood. I haven't used my hood in a couple of years (never had any functional or breakage problems with it) because it's bulky and doesn't provide full sun protection for anything but the 40mm focal length. BTW I'm not out to reignite the hood vs. no hood debate but I...

Please advise me on telephoto zooms

The 40-150 Pro is sharp, contrasty and has excellent color transmission. I haul the 12-100mm f4 when I'm not planning on shooting anything but go for the 40-150 when I know I'll need a telephoto zoom. I'm reminded of how good a lens it is every time I look at the results from it. Busy...

The Reason Camera Sales are Stagnant [Blog]

Current camera sales are at about the same level as they were in the mid-to-late 70s. Back then they had a lot more competitors too. It's just that manufacturers have some weird expectation that camera sales should still be at the same insane level that digital camera volumes hit over a decade...

Mirrorless mover 20 with oly 12-40 and ?

The MM20 was the first bag I bought after getting the E-M10 Mk.1. I carried the camera with the 12-40 and the 40-150R, then added the 7.5mm f3.5 FE. The only thing I didn't like about the bag is that the top zipped open away from my body instead of the zipper being close to me. My wife still...

Olympus EM-5 Mark III news and rumors

I saw and handled the E-M5 III this afternoon. The smaller battery is supposed to give the same number of shots as the larger battery in the E-M1 II. I used the basic non-Olympus lens correction built into OV3 for the Samyang 7.5mm FE. It worked pretty well. Of course I now have an Oly 8mm f1.8 and OV3 or Workspace will correct to any extent I wish (but I also have an Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 so am spoiled for choice in UWA.)

    Showcase Panasonic Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4

Full frame fisheyes actually work quite well for some interior shots; your eyes seem to better accept a bit of curvature at the edges of the frame than massive rectilinear distortion at the edges. Back up body (Oly or Pana)

The E-M1.1 probably ticks more boxes for you than anything else. Along with PDAF and IBIS you get weather resistance and good handling with larger/longer lenses compared to the E-M10 series.

    New Smartphone Question

Thursday afternoon I was having a conversation with a potential supplier. My Priv was set to 'speaker' and went dead with no warning. I called the person back on my land line and ordered a new phone as soon as I finished the call. I'll have a Nokia 7.1 and a TPU protective case by next Tuesday.
