'it is the only raw converter that I know of that interpolates surrounding data to create detail in totally blown highlights' Thanks for pointing that out. As I said in my piece I'm a recent convert and still learning it. Another good reason to use it.

Members from 2009 and 2010 Reunion. Drop a line!

Interesting idea, a forum reunion. I'm spending most of my spare time these days on my blog which has turned into a bit of a monster thanks to Google making some search changes earlier this year. I'm still shooting stock and still buying and selling cameras on a regular basis. Still a...

Funny you should mention that! I've just posted some on my blog at:- Soundimageplus: Panasonic GX1 review and user experience - Some samples

Do you buy extended warranty on your cameras?

I never seem to keep a camera long enough to make it worthwhile.

    GX1 or G3?

Its OK unless I start lightening shadows, though I do think that there is an improvement, over previous m4/3 cameras. Now I may be imagining this as I indicated, but it does seem possible to lift the shadows in a much more successful way. Its a fair amount of work, as I indicated in the blog...

    GX1 or G3?

Yeah quite right. Same old nonsense about musical instruments. If you're a musician you should be able to play anything right? As the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band said: Eric Clapton on ukelele.

    GX1 or G3?

Just to say I have changed my mind on this. (So whats new!!) Taking it out for afternoon, I found the GX1 grip more comfortable than the G3. It is slightly, though not much, bigger, but the rubberised, mottled grip is easier to hold and not so slippy as the G3. Consequently, my hand was a lot...

    My Christmas present to myself.

And you think "bonding" is odd??
  10. soundimageplus

    My Christmas present to myself.

Its not dissimilar, however it has somewhat more friction and with the camera being a different shape it seems to feel different. However as I wrote on my blog I'm not as enthusiastic about it as some others seem to be. I'm currently investigating a leather half case.

According to Olympus, PENs are feminine

Assuming of course, they are in a position to make anything, and not all in jail, or bankrupt. I think we have quite enough "butch" cameras thanks very much.
  12. soundimageplus

    My Christmas present to myself.

The G3 has gone. I never really "bonded" with it. I didn't like that 1/2 and 1/2 grip. It always felt very uncomfortable. The GX1 and a 20mm f/1.7 are the only m4/3 I'm going to be keeping at the moment. The GX1 is very similar to the G3 in terms of performance. The GX1 has the rangefinder...

    My Christmas present to myself.

I'm probably not the right person to ask as I'm not a great touchscreen user. However I would say that it does seem very responsive. Earlier Panasonic manifestations of this have been a bit sluggish, but this seems much slicker. Certainly the review at Digital Rev suggested this also. As to...

    Is GX1 worth upgrading ?

I haven't had the GX1 long, so bear that in mind, but I think its certainly a nice upgrade from the GF1. The extra pixels, the (much) better viewfinder option, virtual spirit level and improved high ISO performance all contribute to make it a worthwhile improvement. However I would say, that if...

    My Christmas present to myself.

On the EVF, its very good. Its hard not to better than the previous one but its a significant improvement. Very similar to the G3 from my limited use so far. I gave it to myself 5 days early since the element of surprise was somewhat lacking!!

Sell you M43 gear and buy this Leica!

You are right, it isn't about photography. With the rare stuff its about collecting and investment. No one actually takes pictures with it anymore. On the point about Leicas are free. I had an M9 for a couple of years, when I sold in and I took my tax allowances into consideration, I made a...

Sell you M43 gear and buy this Leica!

Lets see, very rare lens. Sells for $20,000+ add in original box bought for $2000, probably add $3000 to the price. Keep the lens for 5 years. Probably worth about $30-35,000. The world record for a camera sale is 1.9 Million Dollars. For a Leica of course. Or you could buy some Greek...

    I bought m4/3 because I hate viewfinders.

The viewfinder / no viewfinder debate has always struck me as somewhat overstated. We can prefer one or the other, or indeed prefer one rather than the other in certain situations. This doesn't imply one is "better" than the other, just more suitable for the circumstances. m4/3 and CSC's also...

SLRgear reviews Nex 24/1.8 Zeiss; Pany 20/1.7 better?

For some reason the Zeiss test is conducted on a Sony NEX-5. The Panasonic is on an E-P1. Looking at the comparitive still life images at 100% I'm not sure I can really spot that much difference. Also how much the results are affected by the camera / sensor used, is another factor. The Zeiss...

    American Censorship Day

I must admit I'm saddened by the response that equates theft with freedom, and whatever the merits of the legislation, any attempt to try to redress the balance in favour of the creative over the crooks has merit to me. I can see no justification for allowing the wanton disregard for basic...

    American Censorship Day

As I keep writing, I certainly don't see much enthusiasm here for the concept that people shouldn't be able to steal others intellectual and creative content. I'm sorry, I really don't. I also don't see any great virtue in Google et al. setting the agenda for what is acceptable and what is not...

    American Censorship Day

But surely the solution is in your hands. You elected these people, I didn't. If the legislation is flawed, and not having read all 150 pages I can't say whether it is or not, then surely you need to lobby to change it. A website closes down when it shouldn't, start another one up, it really...

    American Censorship Day

There's a hell of a lot of value judgements there. YouTube is riddled with people posting material they didn't create, didn't buy and basically stole from somewhere. The people who actually created it get ripped off. How is that a good thing? If YouTube collapsed tomorrow, then something would...

    American Censorship Day

    American Censorship Day

And don't those people deserve to be protected? Again, don't those people have the right to stop others stealing their work? Not true. There are lots of alternatives, and again, this legislation surely protects ALL levels. The idea that ONLY Twitter, Facebook, Google etc. can provide these...

    American Censorship Day

While I can't agree with you specifically because I don't know the fine detail of the bill, I do agree in principle. Apart from anything else, the print media and television work with copyright every day, and it doesn't seem that some 1984 totalitarian regime has emerged because of that. Why...

    American Censorship Day

As I said, whether this legislation is the right way to do it, I cannot say, and there may be better ways to do it. However it doesn't seem to be working that well at present. On the second point, no legislation won't protect me if I'm on my own, but since most of the companies I sell through...

    American Censorship Day

    Wow! Fuji CSC Leak!

Neither was I, which proved to be the problem. I grabbed the first M8 I had (bought new) quickly by the strap & dropped it, smashing the screen into fragments and rendering the whole thing inoperative. Fortunately the passport covered it and I received virtually a new camera back, which cost me...

    Wow! Fuji CSC Leak!

Things must be going well!! I did work with an M9 and an M8 for a while, but I'm not sure I could have coped with hanging that much round my neck, particularly when the 1 year passport ran out! I have been known to drop them! I have since become an ex-Leica user and my grip on my cameras has...

    Sigma and Pentax Sales DOWN

Well, I've owned and used both extensively, and while I liked the K-5, the D7000 worked better for me, was more responsive, and generally made picture taking a lot easier for me. I presume you have had the opposite experience. In which case You pays your money..... etc.

    Sigma and Pentax Sales DOWN

MORE GENERAL RAMBLINGS ON THE STATE ON THE CAMERA INDUSTRY. I've always found Pentax to be very frustrating. In my last days of film I used a couple of MZ 35mm cameras and a 645. There was then a long wait for them to get into digital. By then I'd sold my limited lenses and gone elsewhere. It...

Thanks for the link. That was an excellent read. As someone who has also recently sold a Leica M9 to use both m4/3 and NEX, I can readily identify with that. Having used these smaller systems for weddings, events and all sorts of commercial work, the advantages are numerous. I also believe...

Which body best charms the rattlesnake?

It did get to me and I did what you are considering. I went to a store and tried it on a G3, which was a lot better. Its still there, but way quieter and I really don't notice it. I'm also considering a GX1 as I prefer that design over the G3, and the lens does do wonders with those extra...

Which body best charms the rattlesnake?

Firstly, you may not have a problem. It doesn't seem to affect all lenses. Secondly, you can programme a function button to set exposure lock and that stops it. Thirdly, it does still click on Panasonic bodies, but its so quiet its virtually unoticeable.

Is the G3 just a grainy camera?

As others have indicated, there are ways around it, and I'm sure for many of us the advantages of m4/3 outweigh the disadvantages. Again as indicated the sensors are improving and I see that continuing. It will be interesting to see whats possible with GX1 raw files, for example. Pixel...
