Just want to say farewell to the members here, most have been helpful and informative. But recent clashes has made me seen that part of the forum does not wish to provide new users with accurate info. And I have be inform that correcting that info does not seem to be the correction thing to...

The facts are if someone is after sports of their kids growing up m4/3 currently is not the right system for that. It can get a good shot, and a moment now and thing. But it is far from consistence. As a pro, you should know that 2.8 gives a photography a great leg up when shooting action...

    Chinese community volleyball (Ottawa,Ontario,CA)

Also it was the OP of this thread that injected that M4/3 with a 20 1.7was a good action setup into that thread. I just rebuff that facts of those shots. It is near focus to infinity. Which is why there is very deep dof in all those shots. It is what I would do if I were using a pns, it is...

Yes, I am not bible. But physic is physic. What some over state the capability of a system, and others buy into it thinking it will give them that capability. And then find out, it is not the advocate of that system that shell out the money, rather the person the follow the inaccurate...

    Very true.

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

the difference with the incamera jpeg, is it is out of camera. That is what the camera can do. Camera o Camera.

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

like the results from the hx5v at 800iso, pretty clean when using twilight. But you really can do the same in pp with a good NR program.
  9. S

    Best noise removal software?

the topaz is really good, they might have best NR program currently.
  10. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

I just saying the dxo results are not bible. And that it should not be consider the definitive sensor test. As it is flawed.
  11. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

The twilight mode is another word for NR that sony uses. It is pretty darn good for what it is. But you can get similar results with a high end noise reduction program. I have ran 12800 through denoise and had a decent photo.
  12. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

The panny jpeg engine has much to be desire until recently. To really get good results, you had to shot raw. So with the G1 you can easily out preform the jpeg from the camera. And no, sports photog shoot more in jpeg then in raw, as raw really slows down the burst. And if you look at the...
  13. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

I have seen samples with different raw processing that can flip flop with dxo results shown where the noise level of a canon sensor out did the nikon sensor, which never happens. That was recently tested by popular photography where the 60D using the canon provided software out did the d7000...

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

At 3200 you will see it on most 13 inch monitors to be honest. And those 3200 were taken with decent lighting. Now when you drop the light, the noise will come out even more,
  15. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

And as a raw shooting you should realized that workflow is very important, and not every workflow works with every raw file the same way. So works better then other. So dxo's work flow shows 1/3 of a stop, but another may show 1 full stop. Workflow is very very subject and file related...
  16. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

it is dxo, and it is all raw workflow. Just look at the image resources comparison of 3200, the noise level is very very noticeable between the 2 camera. Dxo results are nice to know, but it is not bible. As it is a flawed test to be honest because workflow can favor one over another, and...

    Chinese community volleyball (Ottawa,Ontario,CA)

To plays devils advocated, you were using a pancake, and all these shots look like the lens was at infinity, as the subject are far away. Not much AF'ing to do by the lens. You pretty much lock focus. As you can tell form the shots. You pick and choose your shot, and the camera will...

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

I shoot the K-x allot and it works great at 1600, and 3200 is more then usable. And a little NR in pp can recover most noise issue at 3200. In decent light high iso flaws are hidden more, I have dial the k-x to 6400 and gotten decent shots. But there is no reason to shoot at 6400 in decent...
  19. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

John, that is just talk, the image resources image comparison pretty much proves it. The G3 still fall short of APS-C at 3200iso. The K-x still has a much cleaner image.
  20. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

To make a camera sound like it can take good photo like a dslr. But if you got to image resources compare image section. You will see that once past 1600iso, all the aps-c dslr just out preform m4/3. The G3 at 3200 vs the k-x at 3200 iso it a substantial difference in noise. Especially if...

So Has Anyone Dropped Or Damaged An EPL1?

not drop but mine get bang around allot with all the traveling. And I take it to the beach all the time, not worries about sand or salt water. Just take a simple precautions when change lens to put your back to the wind, and kept the sensor facing down during lens swaps. And if you are worry...

    Micro four-thirds cameras are wimpy

How did you choose Olympus over Panasonic or vice versa?

if you read the early post I point to the epl-1 is what I shoot, and the epl-1 is better then both the ep1/2 as it has the newer AA filter. The older pens did not perfrom well at 1600iso. I was going to get the ep2, then they came out with the epl-1 and the reviews show that the new AA filter...

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

Pentax k-x can fit into a lumbar or fanny pack. It is one of the smallest dslr's out there. Not much different in size to the G2 or GH camera. What the G3 will even be a tad smaller, but it will out do it in HD.
  26. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

not for track sports for sure, and high school plays. The pentax will shoot well at 3200iso better then the g3, and if you need to push the k-x it will without a doubt out do the g3 at 6400iso. Low light is not a strong suit of m4/3 indoor events are not great form them where the light is...

How did you choose Olympus over Panasonic or vice versa?

I shoot in low light allot, and at 1600, there is a night and day between the G1/2/10, GF1/2 compare to the epl-1. I use 1600 allot, and have done a comparison to dslr at 1600. While the dslr is cleaner, the oly is acceptable. Not the G1/2/10 or GF1/2. The reason for the better iso...

How did you choose Olympus over Panasonic or vice versa?

panny has a good tool, there are things they do better then oly, but there are things the oly does better. And neither really nail the best compact body. Panny did lead by allot in AF compare to the ep1/2, but that was resolved by firmware and improve further by msc lens. Oly lead in iso...

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

Better then the sony entry, but the pentax, nikon and canon. They are on par in many repects, better in some and not as good in other. They are different tools for different needs.

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

FPS allows you with all the equation to hedge your bet in capturing that exact moment to the big hit or great catch. Start bursting as you think the hit will come and stop at the the and you might get a moment in the tackle or catch that is just prefect.
  31. S

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

EVF black out is a big problem, trying keeping a hs running back in the frame when he is romping and zigging on a foot ball field. You will see why it is a big issue for sports when shooting in burst. And though it has a high fps rate, the AF is still not at the speed of a dslr phase detect...

Another telephoto question - for the Panasonic G3

The down size of the panny 14-140 is the added weight when hiking. It is allot bulky also then the oly options. But with a Panny body, I would go with the larger and more expensive lens. The IS will help out on the long end of the zoom. The pro of the oly lens is that it gives you the same...

    Is the G3 "near DSLR"?

well m4/3 does not have the DR of the larger sensors of the big boys. They do not have the ability to shoot action like a dslr. So as good as the m4/3 are, they are still not at the level of a dslr in those regards. M4/3 still do not shoot well past 3200iso, and that is pushing the noise...
  34. S

How did you choose Olympus over Panasonic or vice versa?

the panny jpeg is not more accurate, the color are not true to life form my experience. I have looked at all the sample of the panny tweaks, and they are better then default, but they are not great either. To get the best out of the panny, RAW shooting really helps out. The updated engine for...

How did you choose Olympus over Panasonic or vice versa?

the GF1 and G1/2/10 did not preform as well at higher iso then the epl-1, and the added ibis gave it ability for shooitng low light static shots. And the GF1/2 evf option was no where as nice as the vf2 form olympus. And the nicer jpeg was a plus.

One adapter to rule them all - universal lens adapter

how well does those screws and fitting prevent light leaking into the camera. cheapo macro tubes where prone to them with poor seals. This does not look like it would create a great seal on the lens.

    Leaked Panasonic GF3 Size/Shape Compared to GF2

I used the gf2, and i am not to keen on the touch screen, I keep finger printing it up. And it does require a touch here and a touch there, it is pretty good for a touch screen. But it is not the same as dedicate buttons.
  38. S

    Leaked Panasonic GF3 Size/Shape Compared to GF2

from a dslr camera users point, the gf2 does not have allot to hype about, a new sensor and that is about it. More touch screen means more menu diving. It is after a target market, and photographers will not get all worked up about it. But the point and shooter, they will get a nice jump in...

    Flash suggestions for GH2

they really need to add it for a high end body. Entry levels are getting them also. the epl's and the canon 600D all under 900 dollar kits. And the pentax k-x and k-r not to expensive either.
  40. S

What does the EVF do on the new G3?

they went with the newer epson evf for the gh camera. It is a higher res evf for the gh2, with a updated lcd as well form the previous. The GH1 had the same one form the previous models. My mistake about the GH1.
  41. S

    Flash suggestions for GH2

You might be correct, I just read the spec, no mention of master mode for the built in flash. Guess those early reports were wrong.
  42. S

What does the EVF do on the new G3?

Also the GH1/2 has a higher res evf then all the previous pannys. Think it is the same one in the G3.
  43. S

Do all m4/3 cameras go black in between shots?

yes the refresh rate of the evf are not fast enough to prevent it form going black. Even the sony slt do not give you live data. They seem not to go black but they are actually projecting a image that is 1/10 of a sec early. So you are not seeing the live event but the photo of what it captured.
  44. S

    Flash suggestions for GH2

the gh2 has wireless ttl, no need to go optical slave. The metz is a ttl slave. Nissin di466 is optical only.
  45. S

should I or Should I Not

if the wallet is burning for you to get something, get the epl-2 and you will have a good backup for the new oly when it comes out, and the msc lens focus pretty darn fast relatively for a mirrorless, and it is better then the gf2 in higher iso.
  46. S

should I or Should I Not

it has gone back up with supplies getting low, they were pretty cheap in the 700 dollar range couple of months ago.
  47. S

Why does the Panasonic cost more than the Olympus?

If you do not shot heavy action or need more dof control. The m4/3 does a excellent job. For a single shot, the AF on the gh2 is pretty good. But once you have to shoot a 5 sec burst, that becomes a problem. It is not a camera for action. Lighting fast for the first shot then refresh...

    Pictures of Panasonic GF3 leaked

It does look like a hasselblad that the pro was using.
  50. S

Why does the Panasonic cost more than the Olympus?

If you were going heavy into action, the 60D over the d7000. The small buffer of the d7000 hinders it for action shooting. can only take a 2.5 sec burst at 6fps then it slow to 1fps. The 60d can burst for 50 shots before it slows down. The pen's are fun camera to shoot. It is a excellent...
