    Fujiya camera lens feeding frenzy.

I always think it's funny to see the used camera lens feeding frenzy at Fujiya camera. To those who haven't been, Fujiya is a camera store in Tokyo. It's actually composed of 3 stores. The new store, the used store and the everything else that isn't a camera or lens store(tripods, bags...

    Lumix GM1 + 14-42EZ

That's an ideal, unfortunately in execution it's not completely true. I know of at least one M43 lens that will physically not mount on some Olympus cameras. Various other lenses have compatibility problems ranging from AF to fringing to banding when using it on another manufacturers body.

    Lenses to avoid?

Old lenses do tend to develop fungus. I haven't had any modern lens get fungus. I don't think it's the UV filter. Glass itself is a great UV filter. So there's a permanent one on the lens anyways. I think it's the materials they used back then. Some were organic. Like the glue. Everything's got...

    Vintage Lens collection storage/display ideas

I have a lot of lenses. A lot. For years, I kept them in cardboard boxes. Like instead of recycling boxes I get from Amazon, I would fill them full of lenses. Now I use Christmas ornament trays and stack them into big Costco plastic storage tubs. There's space on the side so I put a tub of...

I will never, ever again fly United

I don't get that from the interview the mom gave on the news. Although she did say that she told a flight attendant, she also said she didn't mention it again. So I don't think United forced the mom to do anything. It didn't seem like they knew about it until it hit the news. A question I...

Is your M43 system your main, secondary, or only camera?

Funny related story. I was digging through the junk drawer last night looking for a soldering iron. I found a GF2 body I didn't even remember I still had.

I will never, ever again fly United

I think the last thing our society needs is even more litigation. You can do something at the time and not be considered an aggressive passenger. Just don't act like one. The fact is being assigned a seat that someone else is also assigned to is fairly common. I've seen it happen more than a...

I will never, ever again fly United

The truth is from flight cancellations to lost baggage to unruly passengers like what happened on Delta a couple of days ago, 2016 was a multi-year if not historic low. The thing that has changed is the likelihood of these incidents being reported on the news. That has a lot to do with...

Any reason that the E-M10II is worth less than the original?

I've noticed that the original E-M10 has a higher Amazon trade in value than the E-M10II. Is there any reason the E-M10 commands a higher price used?

    Potential Laptop/Electronics Ban - Looking for Opinions/Options

If he has a laptop with those specs and uses it accordingly, then a Surface Pro 4 is not what he wants. Microsoft crippled the cooling on the Surface Pros from version 3 on up to get the desired form factor. Thus after a short time of intense CPU and GPU use, a SP3 or SP4 will thermal throttle...

    Potential Laptop/Electronics Ban - Looking for Opinions/Options

This is the way to know for sure. I don't know about Finland, but here in the US it really depends on what the rules are when you signed up for your policy. For example, many insurance companies will not insure smartphones any more but if you signed up for your policy when they did, you are...

    Potential Laptop/Electronics Ban - Looking for Opinions/Options

I guess what matters is what you mean by illegal. From my understanding, it's the same in both the US and Australia. It's not illegal in the sense of a criminal penalty. It's illegal in terms of a civil penalty. Will they arrest you for checking in spare li-ion batteries in Australia? In...

    Potential Laptop/Electronics Ban - Looking for Opinions/Options

My understanding is that spare loose batteries cannot be checked in period. So you would have to put those in your carry ons. If in your carry ons, you don't have to do anything special. I believe the limit is two spare batteries. Also at Chinese airports at least, the size of the battery is...

In my understanding, it's the same rule in the US/UK/Australia/China and in most countries concerning lithium ion batteries in checked baggage. Most rules are not country specific since by it's nature air travel is international. So most rules are adopted around the globe. The rule is that...

So smartphones are OK? Is this a conspiracy by the smartphone lobby to put the final nail in the coffin for the camera industry? ;) Flying into Canada will not help. In many things, Canada and the United States are effectively the same entity. Air travel is one of them. That's why you'll...

    Potential Laptop/Electronics Ban - Looking for Opinions/Options

As I alluded to in my other post, any large enough fire will be impossible to put out in due time to prevent a "catastrophe". The beauty of halon is that it's a catalyst. It's not one and done. It'll keep working. The problem is you need time. The solution to that is high concentrations. I...

Hm... if you mean the stored energy in terms of free hydrogen until exhausted. That's what burns when a lithium battery cooks off. It's the hydrogen that's released when the battery overheats. That's where halon comes into play. Halon is a catalyst. It scrubs hydrogen out of the air by...

    Sony A6500

Just a few tidbits. Android was first conceived as a camera operating system, but the camera market was too small to make that viable. So they adapted it to phones. Having said that, Android is the operating system that is used in some cameras. People just don't know nor care as long as the...

Panasonic Kills GM & GF Lines

I see it now. I thought those were crops since they were so small compared to that first image. I am confused why he says that he tried many lenses though. There are actually very few M43 lenses that will work adapted onto e-mount. Two big problems. The first is there's no way to control...

Panasonic Kills GM & GF Lines

Unless I'm missing it, I don't see where in that article they show that several M43 lenses cover APS-C quite well. The one lens they used shows that it doesn't. That is about the same coverage as you would expect from some c-mount or 110 lenses. Native APS-C lenses have larger image circles...

Panasonic Kills GM & GF Lines

Your suspicion is not true. I am one of the few people that have been foolish enough to try to adapt M43 lenses onto e-mount cameras. On a APS-C sized sensor, M43 lenses have a small image circle. About the same as what a c-mount lens covers. So for the most part, M43 lenses only have an...

Depends on the lenses. M43 lenses aren't that much smaller than many M43 owners seem to think. I have a variety of lenses from FF to APS to M43, they really aren't that different in length. The M43 lenses tend to be thinner, but it's relatively minor. As long as a lens isn't wider than the...

Sony is killing it, what's the next move from Panasonic/Olympus?

I too have been in tech since the '80s. While what you are saying is true in many cases, it's not true in all cases. Two instances standout in my career. The organizations I was with had open and broad collaborations with our partners. During these projects, their engineers were embedded...

What A7R II tech might flow down to m4/3?

Yes, Sony was interested in their medical imaging division. It's the money maker afterall. But they were also interested in the digital camera division. As per the President of Olympus about Sony when they bought 11.5% of Olympus. "Olympus President, Hiroyuki Sasa's statement explains 'In...

Sony is killing it, what's the next move from Panasonic/Olympus?

That's not definitive. People aren't considering another possibility. It would explain how the chip can be exactly the same size and even DXO the same. Sony and Aptina have a cross licensing agreement. So it can walk like a Sony sensor. It can quack like a Sony sensor. That doesn't mean...

Sony is killing it, what's the next move from Panasonic/Olympus?

While that is quite true, that's not what's holding back development of sensors. They are already going as fast as they possibly can. The technology they use to make these sensors isn't isolated. It's leveraged off the broader silicon chip industry. So as the fabrication technology advances...

Sony is killing it, what's the next move from Panasonic/Olympus?

ROI has nothing to do with it. It has nothing to do with declining camera sales. It's just a fact of life. On silicon, it's much easier to do make small things than it is to make big things. It's about yield. It's the same reason that a bigger size TV costs more than a smaller size TV...
