It's easy to take this little lens for granted: it's tiny, light, made of plastic down to the mount, slow and came practically free along with my E-PL2. That would be a mistake. Within its range, its IQ compares very well to my last "kit" lens, the Canon 24-105 f/4L. The 14-42II is particularly strong at the extremes of its zoom range, which is where I find I take the most shots. On the E-PL2 it can make crisp, satisfying prints at 16x20--the quality of which seems to be limited by the E-PL sensor. As I've dumped my full frame DSLR so that I can upgrade my MTF kit as my main system, I've had a hard time justifying purchase of native primes within the range of this lens. For example, both the the Panny 14mm and Olympus 17mm pancakes test worse than the 14-42 at their respective focal lengths and those primes have only a limited speed advantage over the zoom. The Panny 20mm f/1.7 may make some sense because of its big speed advantage (although IQ doesn't seem that much better). Otherwise, my lens purchase will probably be primes outside the range of this little gem.
