If you are looking for a cheap tele with large maximum aperture, this lens is a good choice. F 2.8 is perfectly usable, the maximum sharpness is between f 4.7 and 9.5 (half stop clicks).
It is a compact but heavy lens that is very good for handheld shooting because of the large maximum aperture and the right focal length. With crop factor 2.0 I think something around 150 mm is more or less the maximum to use without tripot and auto focus.
