This lens deserves its universal praise. I have owned other kit "standard" zooms from Canon, Nikon, and Olympus, and this lens is head of pack in optical performance and build quality. As a landscape lens in its focal length range, I believe that it is unsurpassed by any other currently available MFT lens.
The Pana 14-45 isn't as small as Olympus' collapsible 14-42, but it is still very small and light. It's about the size and feel of a typical small (non-pancake) prime lens for an SLR. It doesn't focus quite as close as the Olympus zoom but is still capable of nice close up results.
Highly recommended lens. A couple recent images I made with mine:

Pros:

Sharp, compact and light and small

|
Cons:

slight zoom stickiness

[U]I can only second Amin's excellent summation, its excellent on the G1 as a kit lens and fine on the E-P2 ...
Lens Aberrations' are well corrected when used with the G1 with the jpeg engine or in RAW with correct software ie Silkypix or Lightroom, with an E-PX body CA will not be corrected in jpeg with RAW manual CA is required .. not a big deal actually.
Overall this lens is great its not a trendy fast glass zoom lens just gets the job done well.
My example shows an odd "Stickiness" with the zoom its "Stick Shift" ie plastic to plastic friction so it not liquid smooth its a minor criticism tho' on my part

Pros:

Sharp, contrasty, light
|
|
Cons:

Zoom action not smooth
|

This standard zoom is really good. Sometimes blue fringing is observed with extreme contrast, like branches against the sky, otherwise the lens is simply sharp and contrasty at f/5.6 across the zoom range; at 45mm stopping down to f/8 improves a little on corner sharpness. I use this lens a lot and I don't get nasty surprises. Zooming action is not smooth, but sticky unless you press against the zoom ring a bit. The lens feels a little cheap all over, unlike e.g. the Panasonic 7-14mm or even 45-200mm.

Cons:

Wide-angle performance, max. aperture

The Panasonic 14-45/3.5-5.6 is not a lens without flaws, but it is overall the best standard zoom option currently available for m4/3. While it is a bit soft at the wide end and does suffer somewhat from CA, sharpness ranges from usable at 14mm to excellent at 45mm, and is more than sufficient for most uses. AF speed is superb - it is head and shoulders above the Olympus 14-42 kit lens and unlike the 14-42 accuracy is not an issue.
It would be great if they could improve performance at 14mm and offer a wider aperture particularly at the 45mm end but even as is, the 14-45 is well worth the price of admission.

image quality, small and light, low price

Cons:

slow aperture, not weather sealed

For a zoom kit lens, this is one of the best. Image quality is wonderful. The lens is small and light, easily portable. I'm pleased by the included hood and the 52mm filter threads.
It's no X 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH Power OIS weather-sealed über-lens, but it's a fantastic lens for the price. If you want a good zoom for not much $$$, your search is over.
